Happy Birthday, newey!
Man, I thought I had it bad with a birthday in December so close to Christmas, but you really got screwed...
Well, at least you get two consecutive days of obligatory over-indulgence.
So, in the immortal words of Bob Hope - "You know you are getting old when the candles cost more than the cake." ;D
Happy Birthday

Oh man, I gots to agree with Cyn.
My wife's BD is the 19th of Dec. and it's a struggle to differentiate it into a separate event of its own import (which it is).
It's a somewhat somber event in that she's just a few/several/many/ain't/gonna/tell weeks older than me.
I never say it, but it's always in the air.
Have a great one (or two if'n you can swing it). And tell your wife that ChrisK sez that you definitely NEED another guitar.

Happy Birthday! I have a friend who will be celebrating on the 30th of December too, so you're not alone on the clash with 'other ' festivities.

Thanks, guys! The Christmastime birthday used to be a debacle when I was a kid. Now, I'm kind of grateful that no one notices it! For the past 20 or 30 years, I have always spent my birthday doing the same thing- cooking for Christmas dinner. We usually ate the feast on Christmas eve, reserving Christmas day for opening presents. This year, due to the fact that we have our 1 year old grandson only for today, we did the whole Xmas shebang this morning. Dinner is now in the oven. This means I have all day tomorrow to chill with nothing planned- pure bliss! ChrisK said: She got me one- a lap steel! I had sent her the link from MF for a cheap Rogue lap steel back in November as an Xmas idea, half jokingly. I thought she's go ballistic that I wanted another guitar. Gotta love that woman, there it was under the tree! Haven't had a chance to sit down (literally . . ) with it yet, but it looks real nice for the $80 MF was charging. Comes with a gig bag and adjustable legs as well. Thanks again, and Merry Christmas to all the Nutz!

This would be disconcerting if it had been posted by someone that had relocated based on the availability of alfalfa (for farm animals).
Just wait, you're next. ;D ;D ;D

This would be disconcerting if it had been posted by someone that had relocated based on the availability of alfalfa (for farm animals). True enough, I did move to Wisconsin because the soil and climate lend themselves particularly to grow hay and alfalfa. To preface my disdain for Country Western music, let me say that in the horse business there is an un-natural tendency to listen to Country music. We ran a training/boarding facility for 2 years..it's all I heard. I lived down South for 8 years...it's all I heard. I was born and raised in Chicago...have played in Blues, Rock and Jazz bands. Never in Country Western bands... I would rather drink turpentine and p_ss on a brush fire then play Country music. Whew...that felt better... Oh yea, Happy Birthday, newey... Willie can park on my front lawn anytime. So long as he has his guitar . . I also like bluegrass, western swing, zydeco, mountain blues, and other forms of music from the country. The overproduced self-indulgent pablum emanating out of Nashville, which is called "Country Music" these days, largely leaves me nauseous. On the other hand, overproduced self-indulgent progressive rock is great. Go figure.

Willie can park on my front lawn anytime. So long as he has his guitar . . He'd better bring a bag with him! My grandpa's basement was a honky tonk. I can't stand what I call "Western Pop" (though I do have some nostalgia for Juice Newton), but I don't mind a little Hank Sr, Johnny Cash, etc from time to time. I once had an actual vinyl record (Yes, I'm old too) that was based on the premise that Hank Sr's songwriting was timeless and classic and could translate to any style. To prove this point they had taken all of his biggest hits and re-produced them in a "hip, modern, acid rock style". It was freakin awesome!

Case in point: George Thorogood's cover of "Move It On Over". Who would hear that and think "Country Music"?

Somebody once asked Cheech if he liked country music.
He asked "which country?"
I don't like today's country music, but I do like the real old stuff and bluegrass.
I got Brad Paisley's album "Play" (primarily instrumental) for Christmas. I haven't fully listened to it yet, but I do like what I hear so far.

I'm quite unusual in the UK in that I quite like country music! Yes there is a high cheese factor to contend with, and a lot of the modern Nashville stuff is just over glossed pop with the occasional pedal steel in it. The classics are just that for a reason though- there are some really good songs from Cash and Nelson, and (fun-bags aside), Dolly Parton knows how to put a tune together. And Hank Williams has a pretty good prototype of rock'n' roll going on there too. Nowadays it is one of the few places where all-in production is less of a focus, with an old school setup of each part of the process being to play to an artists strengths- in that there are songwriters, whose songs are performed by singer/performers, who are backed by session players. It gives less character to things perhaps, but means that great guitarists can concentrate on being just that- they don't have to be a great writer to play, a great songwriter can get their songs out without having to force a stage-show, and an amazing singer doesn't have to also be an inspired poet to be of any use. That's not restricted to country of course, and I'm sure there are plenty of writer/singer/players doing a sterling job in the genre too, but I kind of like that old-school approach. I do enjoy being involved in the complete opposite too though!

Happy (belated) Birthday, newey! I wouldn't mind if my birth was overshadowed by Christ's. Having my birthday on Columbus Day would be a bummer though.
