Ok, I know this has probably been asked but I can not find anything specific on this. I have a Crate V50 (single 12" speaker) which sounds just a little too bassey to me so I would like a few recommendations on a new speaker. I do not gig as I am not that good a player, I play mostly tele's and strat's, but do occasionally play my Gibson and Gretsch, I play mainly country, old 50's and 60's rock and roll and blues. I just want to make the tone a little less bassey. Any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Please forgive my intrusion on your query, but it has occurred to me that if anyone has any input on whether the tubes may also be a factor in the desired tone, fire away on that as well.
It has three 12AX7s and two 6L6s, correct?

jwj- Whoa there, pardner! It's only been 24 hrs or so since you posted this. Give the boys some time, don't give up just yet. I don't have any personal experience with this amp, or 12" replacement speakers, so I won't presume to advise you. But someone will be along.

This isn't electronically related, but one thing I've had to do with bass cabinets to remove the boominess is get them off the floor. You can take a run to the local lumber yard, grab a scrap 2" x 2" piece of lumber and make risers out of it.
I just cut them 1" high, glued some felt to each end and placed them in the corners of the cabinet to get it off the floor. Also, moving the cabinet out of a corner can eliminate some of the bassiness from the amp. You'd be amazed how effective your house can be as a passive radiator...
You can also try some acoustic insulation...or just go to the local fabric shop and find some polyester batting. Staple about 1" worth of this stuff inside the cabinet and that'll tighten up the sound.
If you're looking to pull the existing loudspeaker, I've had good luck with Eminence loudspeakers. Check out the Red Coat or Patriot series.
Recommending an exact replacement is tough, as the size of the cabinet, open back or port, as well as material used in the cabinet (plywood or particle board) can all effect the sound.
Happy Trails
