So, I was looking threw my old toys from when I was a wee lad (garage sale, trying to get rid of stuff) and I noticed this "Sting Action Figure" (wrestler, not the singer). I remembered he had a button that made him, yes, vibrate. so I ripped him in half with a hack saw and took out the vibrating deal. I've had this thing sitting around for a while, with no real purpose, and it hit me. When strings vibrate, the pickup hears it... Why not have the pickup vibrate, and the strings keep still? Is this a stupid idea? I might be able to get my friend to put it on his guitar (supposing I can actually attach it to the pickup). What are your thoughts? and don't just say yes for the lulz.

ijustwantastrat, Not stupid at all to throw the idea out there ... but I do think it kinda flies in the face of the pickups picking up each individual string vibrations. Never stop thinking, but I wouldn't be seeking investors on this idea. D2o

Hmmm, I detect the distinct odor of a home-made E-Bow in the air.....

Hmmm, I detect the distinct odor of a home-made E-Bow in the air..... ;D That was my first thought, too ... unfortunately it seems to be a reverse wind in the air!

If nothing else, then it would probably add a little - I'm going to call it "flavor" - to the sound of a string being plucked over a vibrating pickup.
I'm curious to see how it works.
Keep us updated... for the lulz, if nothing else. ;D

I'd imagine it would sound a whole lot like the motor of the vibrating device. That is, it would be a steady tone with some harmonics.

When I was in high school, one of the big local bands was called 18 Dimensions of Love. They did grungey punk rock type stuff ala Mudhoney et al. I did a session recording them in my mom's basement (Five Miles from Nowhere Studios). The bass player had a large pink...um...personal massager( )...that he would use over the pickups during some of their extended feedback jams. Well, he left the thing sitting on top of his bass amp after one day's session was done since we were coming back the next day to finish things up. That night my grandparents spent the night at my mom's house. Of course, the guest room where they were sleeping was in the basement, and they had to walk right past the thing. I never heard anything about it, but...

sorry it took so long to reply. I couldn't find a way to fix the weird vibrating motor thing on the pickup, so I just decided to stop thinking about it. Also, I was sort of going for the reverse-ebow deal. I am keeping it just incase I figure a way to mount it. Of course I will put soundclips and pics on the forum if I do. "just for the lulz".

I did it for the lulzI don't think you can do a reverse e-bow ... the e-bow does, after all, still vibrate the string(s). I think that the best you can hope for is a mish-mash sound that could probably be somewhat close to that of plugging in your ax, sitting it on your lap, and letting your fingers do the walking on your pickguard. ... wait, is this the lulz? Just to throw this in after the point was lost...what about mounting the vibrating motor to the Trem-Leo and vibrate the entire bridge?
You could then fret your self silly with both hands developing a whole new sound and market your new found toy for fame and fortune.
Maybe the Chinese factory still the plans and patterns for the devices laying around...save you a fortune on tooling costs...
As ChrisK would say...Marketing Is...

Yeah, but market it as the "Sustaining Vibrator". Mount it on the back surface of the guitar.
You might not sell many to musicians, (or at least to the easily distracted).
You might also have to actually kill the guitarist to end the solo...............
But seriously folks, If you could modulate the Tremo'Leo (IT'S A VIBRATO), one would get actual non-harmonic frequency inter-modulation effects.
FM, Frequency Modulation, Vibrato effected to the string FREQUENCY TUNING on the guitar. Erroneously called tremolo by Fender in guitars and propagated by the think-less ever since.
AM, Amplitude Modulation, Tremolo effected to the signal AMPLITUDE LEVEL in the amp. Erroneously called vibrato by Fender in some amps and propagated by the think-less ever since.
"What's the difference, it sounds the same", uttered by the toneless ever since.
