I'm looking for a pickup. I have a few needs, and a few wants.
I have a Gibber LP with an duncan p-90 2 in the bridge. It absolutly screams.
Ive just made workable a strat clone. HSH. White/maple/black hardware. I want that p-90 sound in the bridge, but I -need- black hardware. I want something with sizzle. Something hot enough to fry an egg inside the refrigerator in the kitchen with the amp on 4 in the basement.
Considering the gibson p-94, but I hear that they're not as hot as a traditional p-90... I want hotter! I want a phat cat, single coil p-90 in the humbucker housing.
I use a SH-1 '59 in the neck. Possibly my favorite pickup of all time (they even sound good split! I mean very good!) but I want something insane in the bridge.
Something that sounds exactly like the number 2 duncan p-90 would be perfect. Hum is not an issue.
I forgot to mention, but would like to say that I tried and do not like the duncan phat cat. And it's the wrong color. Simply unacceptable!
I <3 exposed coils.

Syd- I read of your recent experience with Guitarfetish, but as you mentioned, that was with a neck. Have you considered one of their Mean 90s? I haven't done a build with these so I can't speak from personal experience, but I use GFS pickups a lot and in general they're very good. These are black, and HB sized. They're not open-coiled, but it may be tough to find a P-90 in a HB size that is open. These are cheap enough that you could try one, and if it's not hot enough for your liking, sell it off on Ebay and recoup most of what you paid. Trying to find the one best pickup to get the sound you have in your mind can be an expensive trial-and-error quest. Even if someone here tells you they like such-and-such pickup, there's no guarantee you'll like it. If you're that enamored with the sound of the SD SP90-2, you could also buy one of those and re-rout your guitar to accomodate it. It's not that big a size difference from a HB; if you have one of the universal "swimming pool" routed bodies you may not even need to do anything but modify the pickguard. If you're leery of your skills at cutting the guard, Warmoth (and others) will do a custom Strat guard with a soapbar hole in the bridge position.

Hmhmhmhmhmhmhmmm...
I think I like em.
And yeah, an exposed coil in mini is hard, let alone phat 90. I just thought I'd add the last bit as a sort of post script.
The mean 90 looks very promising. I simply refuse to pay more thann 100 bucks for a pup, so I have a huge number of them removed from the list of possibilities. (coughlollarriograndlawrence)
I've played some of those 150 dollar magno-bits. I've never been all that impressed.
For 40 bucks... I'm going to give a GFS pup a shot, I do believe.

If you aren't in a huge hurry, watch their Ebay auction items, sometimes you can even get them for less. I have one of their Dream 90s for a future build that I got for about $23 on auction. Someone a while ago speculated that the GFS pups sold by Guitarfetish are made by Artec Sound. If you look at their "factory" line of pickups, many seem identical to those that GFS has. But you can't buy them retail from Artec, they apparently deal with distributors only on these. Artec also makes several different 9V mini-amps which seem very similar to my Orange Micro-Crush, so I suspect they make those for Orange as well. The Artec ones, however, have cool real-wood cabs on them, whereas mine has the traditional Orange tolex.

You know, now that I'm looking at this...
They make quite a few things that look like the items sold on giitarfetish.
Check out the "active preamps" area of guitarfetish. A few of those look similar.

Yes, but . . .
On the other hand, the top of the "electronics" page on their website says "beware of counterfeiters- genuine Artec products have Artec printed on the circuit boards".
I have a couple of these things from Guitarfetish, again, waiting for future projects. Neither of them says "Artec" on the PCB anywhere that I could see.

Here's one that's always good for two chuckles: The first is when you say the name, and the second is when you see the DC resistance. "motherbucker" ...
