Ok guys I need some ideas. I have an SG ..... its a nice Epiphone copy with the bound neck and it plays great. I want to get some pups that will take this to a vintage state. The pups in it right now are just ok ....... suggestions??

You mean like the original 13 colonies? UPS or FedEx will take it here. How about a JB in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck? Of course, this is my preference for a Gibson SG (all mahogany). I don't know what the Epi is made out of, since sometimes they use "tonewoods".

I prefer the '59 in the neck to the jazz, but it's hard to go wrong either way.
For bridge... Eh... JB is one option. It's up to the ear of the beholder, I suppose.
'59 in the neck is my favorite pickup-in-position for a mahogany body. Especially one without a maple top. Been using that setup for a while, now. They even sound pretty good split.
Edit: If it has a bound neck then it's very unlikely that it's not mahogany.

Since 1980 I've owned a Gibson SG Standard, a guitar which began a neverending journey of guitar rewiring. The problem I had with the SG is that it sounded too muddy all the time. angelodp, before you invest in new pickups, have you considered rewiring the current pickups already in the Epiphone SG? Basically, can you bring out 4 wires from the pickups? Anyway that's the first thing I'd try. I would have done that with my Gibson SG but as everybody knows, the pickups it came with were those chrome-covered, sealed-for-eternity, epoxy-filled bricks.

Ok, it is a two wire out right now. I will have to get the pups out to see if a 4 wire config can be had. But do tell me more. How did you get happy with just wiring?? New pots & caps, or simply having full range of coils avail ?? I just read the resistance ( tonsils ) of the pups..... 13.8k on the Bridge 8.8k on the Neck Is that what its supposed to be.... i'll check somewhere. ange

I like wiring switches and pickups much more than changing pots or capacitors primarily because pickup switching produces very dramatic tone changes. I've posted this link before, but here are some of the guitars I've rewired: www.1728.com/super7.htm If nothing else, just putting a series/parallel switch on each of those pickups will produce a huge tone difference.
