A friend of mine has a little ukulele, and asked me to see about re-stringing it and giving it a once over. Are "Ukulele Strings" an available commodity in this world? Can I just use part of a set of nylon strings? If so, which ones, and what is "Standard Tuning" for an Ukulele? Much appreciated, once again

I don't know much about ukuleles, but you could try some of these links for info and amusement. _________________________________________ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukulele(basic info, from the ubiquitous wiki) _________________________________________ www.juststrings.com/ukulele.html(you can buy ukulele specific strings, online, if desired) _________________________________________ www.ehow.com/video_4396952_ukulele-string-tips.html(a series of ukulele videos from a guy that reminds one of what "Beaker" would surely look like if he was human, instead of a Muppet) _________________________________________ (this mysterious person (only because the video is dark) also gives a review of a number of classical guitar strings (Savarez & D'Addario) used on his ukulele, as well as actual ukulele string sets) _________________________________________ (oh, how infectiously excited and cool ukulele's can make people ... especially the part from 1:50 to 2:10) _________________________________________ www.get-tuned.com/ukulele_tuner.php(tuning - and online tuner - for ukuleles ... er, or at least for the use of people who play ukuleles) _________________________________________ nfo.net/usa/uke2.html(a chord chart for ukuleles, using standard tuning - g c e a) _________________________________________ (last, but certainly not least, here are some examples of good ukulele playing) _________________________________________ I gather that you can make a set of ukulele strings out of the correct classical guitar string singles. I hope some of this leads you to some answers that are helpful, or at least provides you with some entertainment. Cheers, D2o

Well, for my money, the real-meal-deal on ukulele excitement is found here: She also has her own site, www.taimane.comBut that's not to take away from the songwriting skills of those two GC girls, they have a future in music, if they keep that up! ;D sumgai EDITed to add: Digging into Taimane's history a bit (on her site), I found out that the above vid was shot 3 years ago, when she was only 15!! And special for newey, I think we can figure out how she eminates that authentic feel: Also taken from her website, specifically her blog page. Seems to be recent. Truly, after all I've seen in this world, the only thing that scares me about this chick is that she does all that double-picking with a stiff thumbpick!!!! My whole hand would be broken by now, if I tried that stunt! Check out some of her other stuff, she's not a one-trick pony, not by a long shot. I can think of more than a handful of guitarist wannabe's that should be thankful she doesn't decide to add on two more strings! ;D s

Well, to be technical, Taimane appears to be playing a baritone ukelele. . . MF has a selection of ukelele strings as well. D'Addario makes 'em.

Got it all sorted out with a little googling... Realised to my horror that Uke strings come - obviously to me - in packs of four, with - a surprise to me - two big strings and two little strings. Then I went off and was further horrified to discover that Ukelele standard tuning is not anything like a guitar's... (bear in mind that I live in South Africa and have never actually seen one played outside of brief appearances in American movies) Anyway, it works very nicely, despite the tuning pegs being hellishly sensitive, and I can play the chords for C, G and F - meaning I now have enough to annoy the living daylights out of anyone within earshot. G7 makes a pleasant although equally annoying variation Thanks for the links - found the chord diagrams particularly useful (now I have to give her a call and tell her she can have it back - good luck learning to play it though...)

No sweat. I didn't know much about the ukulele, so it was informative for me as well. If new strings on a ukulele is anything like new strings on a classical guitar, you may want to hold on to that uke for a little week or three and stretch those strings out ... otherwise I suspect your friend will have a constantly out of tune uke for the same period of time. D2o P.S. That should give you ample time to learn that infectious guacamole song, too - now wouldn't that be impressive?

Stick with "Pipeline".

Yup, it seems that Tamaine the Pipeline playing surfer chick does have more musical and visual appeal than the guacamole girls. ... however - while we haven't actually seen him play the guacamole song while surfing in a speedo yet - we may be able to assume that at least the guacamole girls have warmstrat beat ... maybe. ;D D2o

Hmm. Didn't think of that before manually stretching the strings myself until they stayed put, and giving it back. Ah well. As an aside, is anyone still getting notification emails from ProBoards if someone posts after you? Mine stopped coming and I can't remember where I switched it on in the first place

Sumgai: the girl is cool, without a doubt, but she plays the ukulele rather like a balalaika.
I honestly prefer this one:

dunk, No doubt about it, Jake knows what he's doing! ;D But if you read her site, she names him as her Number 1 influence, and counts him as a good friend. I'd say she's on the right track. As for the balalaika bit, I tend to think that those are three string instruments, and she does have four, albeit somewhat longer, giving credence to newey's supposition that she's using a baritone uke. Be that as it may, they are both (all) tuned in 5ths, not 4ths, as would be, say, a violin. This makes it harder for a guitarist to follow her fingers, until that "secret" comes to light. And good to see your smiling face around here again! sumgai

Just wanted to say that her picking style reminds me of the typical balalaika picking style
Speaking of balalaika, this is a little gem, especially for those who understand russian

I like the way you post those YouTube videos - i.e. without having those annoying ads also appearing beside them ... but I can't figure out how you do it.
What's your secret?
Thanks, D2o

Ours have annoying ads ... yours don't. I wonder why?
Cheers, D2o
Edit: hmm ... one second an ad appears next to the top video but not yours at the bottom ... the next second no ads appear at all - only the videos appear. Are you seeing any ads?

D2ooie, Some few months ago, YouTube decided to "monetize" their product - videos. Not just ads that can be filtered due to their textual (or pictorial) content, but ads stuffed right into the video stream itself. IOW, what the poster put up on the YouTube site is modified to include crapola. Obviously not all videos have been hit with this yet, but the more popular ones usually suffer the malady now. So far as my tastes are concerned, it's hit or miss, much more often on the miss. Underground scuttlebutt has it that many posters don't want their content "modified" (quoted, as opposed the terms they actually used ), and are extemely "miffed" (ditto). There may be a backlash that fuels a revolution, who can tell.... BTW, I don't see anything in either video, and don't recall ever seeing such (at least, not for Taimane). I wonder (a bit) if Google/YouTube is being "market conscious".... i.e. they pick where and when to insert the ads, and don't do it consistently. sumgai

Yep. I can confirm that. Where SG posted the first Taimane video, I see 2 side-by-side ads, both "sponsored" by something called "Pulse 360". One reads "Cleveland Mom Makes $77/Hr. At Home on the Internet!". The other reads "Cleveland Mom Lost 51 Pounds By Following One Simple Diet Rule!" Most market research is broken down geographically according to the Fed-defined MSAs ("Metropolitan Statistical Area"- they used to be called "SMSA"s when it was "Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area") Since the Feds had already done the work, why reinvent the wheel? And I am most decidedly in the Cleveland MSA. When D2o reposted the Taimane link, however, there's no ad I see. Maybe Pulse 360 didn't pay their bill . . . I also now have the same 2 ads on the banner across the top of our site. Those ads are "sponsored by Google", which also owns YouTube. The Markets laughed when Google paid big bucks for YouTube, but they aren't laughing anymore.

DF I like the way you post those YouTube videos - i.e. without having those annoying ads also appearing beside them ... but I can't figure out how you do it. What's your secret? Install Firefox. Install the AdBlock Plus addon. Problem of ProBoards ads, YouTube ads and cheezy Chinese rip-off guitar ads solved, as you will never see them again...or any other ad posted here...or on most other sites throughout the Internet for that matter... c1,
Well, no, that won't work.
The issue is, YouTube is inserting addtional video content (the ad) into the poster's original video clip. That's a part of the .flv or .swf file, and not textual in any way, nor is it a still image whose source can be analyzed for a determination of worthiness to display.
YouTube presumes the viewer wants to see the video, and inserts the ad right into the asked-for content, just like TV broadcasters have always done. As of this moment, there's no known way to eliminate such crapware.
