Over the weekend, I had an opportunity to "fiddle" around with a violin for, literally, a few minutes.
You know ... it was kinda fun!
And funny ... I found it very strange to vibrato ... I just could not get my head around it at first. Instead of trying to rapidly move the finger/hand that was on the string, I kept rapidly moving the bow back and forth. I think I may have killed their cat.
Anyway, I* can see the appeal of fiddlin' - not that I'm going to rush out and buy one.
* This is the opinion of one listener. Other listeners may not share this opinion, and GN2 does not necessarily share this opinion.

subj: Violin ... yeah, I said it You say that like it was a bad thing........ Real bow, E-Bow, it's all good. After all, controllable sustain is the name of the game! sumgai

Its great fun isnt it? Its tuned the same as a Mandolin, so I can find a song or two on the ol' fiddle as well.

Its tuned the same as a Mandolin, so I can find a song or two on the ol' fiddle as well. Funny you should mention that... When my daughter was young she wanted a violin. It arrived about a week before her first lesson. She was all excited and wanted to play something...so... Well, I saw 4 strings and tuned it like my bass - EADG - and proceeded to teach her some simple blues patterns. She practiced like a dog for a week. Then came the first lesson... This is when I learned that it tunes GDAE...boy, were we both surprised... Poor kid, took her two weeks to learn the patterns backwards... Happy Trails Cynical1

Not as funny as the look on the face of the Violin Master, as he heard the undoubtable influence of B.B. King!
"And you say you've been doing this only one week? Oy vay!"
I woulda paid good money to see that one. ;D

I can see the appeal of fiddlin' - not that I'm going to rush out and buy one. I hear you, DD; some of my favourite tunes have fantastic violin parts (Speedway at Nazareth, by Mark Knopfler; anything by Dave Matthews Band!). I'd love to be able to produce the same beautiful sound, but I somehow think it'd take a while to learn.

Yes, it was hard to keep a straight face...I was politely asked to limit my influence on her violin playing by the teacher and the wife... Like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star was a fast track to high brow... Oh well...I left her alone...and she started playing Country music...go figure... Happy Trails Cynical1
