That spot used to log the "most members online"- which was 84, looking at CMA's workbench- or maybe it was 74, I disremember. June, 2007, I think it was . . . before my time here, anyway.
Now, suddenly, it logs the most users instead. And since it just switched, today is the highest. (Reset is!).
Either some coder over at Proboards did some recoding, or perhaps it's an administrative option which one of the admins rejiggered. Wasn't me, I swear on a stack of pancakes!

Errrr..... I've seen that number hit 294! Indeed, as I logged in just now, and went to read this message, the total was 208. It seems to change hourly, perhaps a bit more often, but then again, I don't pay all that much attention to it - it's really just a bit of fluff, so far as I'm concerned. sumgai

I'm talking about users online at a given point in time. Two and a half years ago, the number of "Users Online" suddenly jumped from the usual 25 or so users online during any given busy time to EDIT: 85 users online, and yesterday it jumped to 173 (newey - it was not members online and suddenly changed to users online - it was users online then and now). Curiously, there was no correspondingly abnormal jump in the number of active users in the past 24 hours, which leads me to think it's some sort of Proboards glitch. Now that you know what I'm referring to, you can see that the number of users online at a given time jumping to 173 is a more notable event than the number of active users in the past 24 hours falling to 173. I'm not saying it isn't just fluff, I'm just saying. D2o

D2ooie, Well, you might have me there. Yes, I "fail" to pay attention to either number, they're both "feel good fluffiness" numbers. And I too seem to recall that it's always been "user", but I suppose it could have been "members", I just didn't care enough to force-feed it into my long-term memory cells. For that matter, it's still 173 today, and now my curiosity is aroused...... why would the number remain the same over a couple of days (or longer..... perhaps much longer?). Blaise Pascal would be stupified to learn that this could be possible, in the real world. (You know, that's the world where programmers feel that random numbers are too important to leave to chance.) Inquiring minds really should find other things to do........ sumgai
