Ok, so should I angle the bridge as is done on quite a few Gibson guitars? Is it something I need to somehow test out or is it safe just to place it perpendicularly to the neck at the right length? I am gonna install a Bigsby with a tune-o-matic bridge probably. The nut is shown below. What I meant is should it sit flush against the fretboard and the headstock? I am gonna get a new graphite though. I could make a very slight slot for it to sit in but going down much lower would be hitting the truss rod.

I thought so, I might file a shallow slot for it to sit in. Still not sure about the bridge thing though. Have been reading a lot about it but lots of conflicting views as with these things!

there are conflicting views about EVERYTHING ... even the statement i just made . if your bridge has a lot of saddle adjustment travel you can make up for a slightly imperfect bridge angle. note the words "lot" , and "slightly"

Ok. Well I'm thinking about a Gotoh or Schaller roller bridge. What do you think about those?

Gotoh has a good reputation , and i love Schaller stuff so either should be fine. i would personally go for Schaller , but if i found a great deal on a Gotoh i would be happy to put it on my guitar.

I think that, rather than filling a slot for the nut, you'd be better off sanding down the flat side of the nut to make it a bit lower.

Yeah. I think that's probably a better option. I can always get a new nut if that goes wrong!
With regard to bridges I'll see what I can get a good price on if either will be reliable.

If still considering staining, a cheap quick option is leather stain. It pretty much turns anything jet black if you put enough layers on. It would more than likely cover the grain so the wood dye by far best option.
If you want to see the grain still, generic spray paint would work if you spray on REALLY light layers from a bit of distance but make sure you have some practise spraying first if never done so before and look up about technique as you would easily cover it altogether otherwise.
In regards to fear of scratches/dents, if you do a very thin layer of spray can clearcoat, it'd do the job. I have a maghony RG in black quite thick stain, its not scratched or dented and I've been really abusive to it.
