GMArts is the site where I first got hold of a more-than-decent primer on MIDI essentials. Seems to be a good site all around.

Ditto. It does a very good job at breaking the concepts down into simple descriptions...clearing up several misconceptions...

FWIW... there's also a good video on effects pedals available from Lick Library. Definitely worth looking for, like all theirs I've seen.
