Any experience on applying oil finishes to alder. I have an alder body that I might finish in tung oil and wonder about any required sealing first. Alder is a closed-grain wood, so is it even necessary?

I put oil finish on an alder body before without any sealing and it came out ok. It could have been better but I built it in 1993, didn't have a computer, let alone the internet wasn't anywhere near what it is now, and didn't know of any other resources. I still play it and it's still got the same finish.

I does great! no need for filler.
Once you get to your final sanding stage, mist the wood with water from a spray bottle, just enough to moisten the top, wipe off and let it sit for 5 mins, repeat your final sanding of 220 or 320. Keep doing this until the grain of the wood no longer raises up.
If you skip this step, once you put the Tung Oil on, some parts of the wood grain will raise higher than others, resulting in an uneven look. Good Luck!
