after browsing through this segment of the forum, i stumbled upon the link to guitar fetish's mod boards . the one that caught my eye in particular was the compressor/limiter. now im really not a fan on-board effects but an onboard sustainer? now that cant hurt much now can it? any thoughts? has anyone tried it or anything by them? any good at all?would it be worth slapping that into my guitar or is it another pipe dream?

Go for it, but I have a better idea - why not mount the unit into a separate metal box you can plug the guitar into and operate with a footswitch, then you can have the effect on any guitar or bass you would like to plug into it, rather than mount it inside one instrument. Now why didn't anyone think of that before? I have a small pre-amp card fitted to one of my basses, works fine for not much $$$'s, a bit hissy but perfectly good for the money.

hmmm, Flateric, this 'separate metal box' of which you speak...could it not be used to house other guitar fx?

I'm pretty much completely against on-board effects. I hate batteries to begin with, and having one in my guitar just seems like more hassle than it's worth. Also, like flateric said, when it's built into the guitar, you can't use it for anything else!
I think, though, that you could get a comparable compression in a pedal for about what you would pay for this mod board. For what you'd spend with a box, jacks, stomp-switch, pots, and time you could have something even nicer.

The only time that I put an effect in a guitar, is if that effect only sounds good on that guitar.....
Example being the Vox Tonebender clone that I made only sounded good w/ my best friends SG, so I put it in there w/ a push/pull.
I am w/ ash, you could make one for cheaper to build one in a pedal....

i see i see yes, i too am a big fan of pedals. i was thinking about getting a comp/lmt until a friend of mine said he'd sell me his tonelab se for dirt cheap. i figured i could keep my current pedalboard for my dirty sounds and use the vox for the multi effects (no amp/cab emulation) via amp's fx loop. the reason this caught my attention was cuz im in the process of modding my axe with SD p-rails and triple shots and other bells and whistles and thought itd be kinda cool to have infinite sustain or added bite at the flick of a switch rather than press (stomp?) of a button. i like my pedals and look forward to the multi fx but i can get pretty clumsy with my foot work and i can think of plenty of applications of the board. i mainly want to know if the thing sounds good or bad. maybe its not even worth the trouble if i need to explain myself this far? thoughts? keep em coming! thanks guys!

Oh dear...are you sure you know what these things do...they certainly won't give you infinite sustain! Otherwise, same advice as above, better outside the guitar. My only experience with a "mod board" was for my tele where I wanted to include a tremolo and their mod board is 'optical'...however, it took up a lot of power and was far hissier than pedals I already owned and more expensive and less versatile and was scrapped. In stead at the last minute thing, I did include my own "sustainer" which is a completely different beast and does give infinite sustain, only something like this which has to be mounted into the guitar will produce this effect (other than an ebow I suppose)... beware too many bells and whistles anyway, it is rarely a good idea and always have some kind of plan to keep things in moderation. I like a bit of trick wiring of course but it can be a curse and detract from the guitar and the playing experience sometimes. I note that few if any major players I admire use such tricked out guitars and really there is plenty of tones available even in a stick instrument through technique alone! Oh...and beware the hype on those sites, all things can sound great...in print!
