signal chain testing

In the ongoing battle with the noise in my hot rodded strat, I have decided to take it completely apart and wiring each component one by one to see wich is making the noise. If i took the spring claw out, could i use it as a sufficient ground? Also, when I just plugged the jack into the amp, the noise was present. (The noise is definitely the guitar though, not the amp). Does anyone have any tips for this? Also, where can I find the best tap switch diagrams?

ok lets start with guitarnuts2.proboards.com/page/gn1-pages/wiring/shielding/shield3.php I don't know if you have done this yet but if not do this 1st . and yes you need to have a ground to the string . sound like maybe a open ground . check the input jack 1st and work your way back . tap switch diagram try this www.guitartechcraig.com/techwire/diagindx.htm
