So I've got this beautiful Fender Twin Amp, and I've noticed lately that I absolutely hate it's size. So what I'm proposing, is to split the combo into a head and a cabinet. I've heard people say that high power combo amps tend to rattle the tubes too much and change tone, but I'm not sure how much I believe that. I guess my question is: would separating the amp change the sound? I'm not quite sure I want to risk losing the amp's awesome factor...
EDIT: I know I start a lot of projects and only half finish them (both of my desks can verify this, but I DO actually tend to finish the high-importance projects promptly!)

stratty, Buy, or build, a pair of boxes to house your amp chassis and speakers. That way, if you change your mind for any reason, you're back in business with a twist of the screwdriver. Sure the boxes may cost you few bucks, but if you buy used off of eBay, or even new, you can probably get rid of them for what you paid - net expense: zero. And if you like the separation, then you're golden, with much less effort! HTH sumgai

Yes what sumgai said. Don't destroy your kids inheritance by hacking up a classic amp! At least if you keep the original box intact you can reverse it.

OK...I agree, and the best place on eBay to do this with the least amount of heartache (that doesn't necessarily equate to $$, though), is to have a look at what they sell at "The Musicians Hardware Store" (eBay seller name "busmc")..... lots of stuff there to make you start thinking, and (having dealt with them) nice people too... ...with a bit of friendly-speaking you could probably talk them into making what you want, if they don't have it already. Having said all that...one of MY projects down the street a bit is to do a similar thing to my 59 RI Bassman Tweed....although when I do it, I'll simply take the chassis out of the cabinet and install it in its own 'head'...leaving the main cab untouched and then just containing the speakers. I have already purchased the tweed tolex and matching speaker cloth from busmc some time back, but like you, urgent projects get priority round here....as yet my back hasn't given out entirely, but as I get older, the priority for doing this mod is gradually getting more important... dragging the combo in and out of the van and then up a flight of stairs is not 'heaven'...
