Metal Covers for SCs

so, what's the word on metallic pickup covers used on single coil PUs?

supposedly they do 2 things: 1) prevent hum if grounded, as they provide shielding, and 2) alter the tone somewhat by reducing the high frequencies.

anyone have good or bad experiences with metal covers?

Exactly as you have stated, but beware of covers on eBay.---- I have purchased them from eBay and 2 out of 3 times they have been too small.

Sounds like you got Tele metal covers for the neck pickup.

I did something cheaper : insulate the coil winding with electrical tape or Teflon plumbing tape, then cover it with kitchen foil, and finally, give the foil a connection to the pickguard's shield. (just need a bit of detail work since the foil must not touch the winding)

thanks for the warning, SL. i wish they'd settle on a standard for everything! and i wish ebay sellers would indicate measurements and specs! i had to write to a seller to ask what the DC resistance of his new strat PUs is. the seller was selling them under his own brandname. his reply: they're a new item and he wasn't sure!

bam, i was thinking of installing chrome metal covers partly for aesthetic reasons rather than practical. but i'd be interested in finding out if you noticed much difference in tone after doing the foil shielding.

not much, actually, but it somehow lowers the bass frequency response. I actually was not satisfied, and removed the foil shielding in the end. (i.e. a bit of hum was better.)

Not Tele(tm) covers, sold as American Strat(tm) metal covers, set of three in gold chrome or brushed chrome.

Buyer beware ! ! ! ! !----------

Will only fit import pup's, and not very well either.----
