Hey, I am doing the QTB mod on my standard telecaster, and I have a question. For the mod, John says to shield the neck pickup cavity and the control panel cavity. Then to solder a wire between the two cavitys so that the neck pickup cavity's shielding is grounded through the control panel shielding to the metal control plate which is already grounded. He says that to avoid a ground loop, to make sure that the sheiding on the neck pickup cavity does not touch the neck pickup screws, which touch the neck pickup cover, which is shielded.
Instead of soldering the wire between the cavitys, and grounding through the control plate, why don't you just not solder the wire, and just ground the neck pickup shielding through the pickup screws?
I'm sure there's a reason for this, but I'd like to know why, thanks.

Main reason being, all parts neeed to be connected to each other in order for the shielding process to be complete. If there is a connection between the pup's and the shielded cavities and plates a ground loop will occur, thus causing the unwanted 60 cycle hum you are trying to avoid altogather.-- -- I did not use solder, instead, I opted for a screw and star washer in each cavity with a connector on the end of each end of the wire used. This has worked extremely well for me. Make sure there is absolutely no material in contact with the pup screws and a piece of surgical tubing for tensioning the pup's. Just extra insurance in the event you are using springs for tensioning your pup's.---;D---
