this weekend i auditioned a bunch of pickups for the neck on my main strat now that i have three unused strat pickups, guess it's time to build another partscaster! bodynecknifty pickup ring for the bridge!since i won't order the trem until the body arrives (wanna make sure of the string spacing), i'm going to do a full shielding (including trem cavity) like that one photo i saw here of one of santana's guitars excited to try a maple fretboard since i've never played one.... if i don't fall in love with the guitar i'll probably give it to some younger dudes in a local band i'll keep you fellas updated with pictures!

Hmmm. so oyu've shielded the trem-leo cavity, but not the control one. Possibly not the best idea
(Im guessing you just did it first because of the simpler shape?)

i'm installing some switches in the control cavity so i want to figure out where to put them and drill my holes before i shield it, that way it'll look nice and clean

Just a simple query from me... From where did you grab the copper foil? Was it a StewMac or other "guitar parts supplier" or did you hit the local hardware store? ...and how does the thickness compare to the aluminium foil you'd use in the kitchen? Is it a tougher foil? ...and are you using an epoxy or something to glue it into the cavity? I'm just asking 'coz my crude attempts, while making the guitar a bit quieter, don't really look as clean and elegant as yours(!) Fanx! John

oz- I've been using the tape from Stew-Mac with good results. It's thicker than the kitchen variety aluminum foil and has it's own conductive adhesive so you don't have to bother with epoxy or any other glue. I don't bother to solder the seams together, just overlap them well & I get full continuity throughout. In the case where the cavities are not connected I run a wire between them & solder directly to the copper foil; again I get full continuity between all the cavities. And my shielding jobs are every bit as crude looking as yours. ;D Just so long as it's quiet, right? -lpf3

Since you're on the other end of the globe, you might want to search out a 3M supplier for their 3M™ EMI Shielding Foil Tapes. Probably cheaper then paying the freight across the pond. And if the adhesive is conductive, you can just use the tape to hold the wire between the cavities. HTC1

yeah i use the stewmac stuff. seems to work a lot easier than the first stuff i got off ebay haven't soldered the wire connecting the cavities yet... i keep going back and forth between this project and refinishing my squier strat

shields connected, including the trem claw wilkinson trem dropped in (after plugging up the old holes and redrilling for a usa-spaced bridge) i should get the tuners and middle pickup monday or tuesday, then it's just a matter of wiring it up (and dividing time begtween this and the squier strat body i'm refinishing/rewiring)

What's the idea behind the pick holder? In nearly 50 years, I've lost my pick once, maybe I'm missing something....
Love your build, nice work!

pickups are: fender tex mex from a 62 reissue, lace sensor gold, dimarzio area 67 (so fairly low DCR... if i don't like the tex mex, i have a lace silver on its way) waiting on a 500k pot for the tone, volume will be 250k with a push-pull to reverse the phase of the middle pickup. the will also be a switch to tap the area 67 and just got the single coil i'll make sure to post clips when it's all done!

Since you're on the other end of the globe, you might want to search out a 3M supplier for their 3M™ EMI Shielding Foil Tapes. [...] Probably cheaper then paying the freight across the pond. Appreciate the thought... but, as usual, the MoronicBunnies tm that sit behind many web sites have been at work again. I filled-in their (incomplete) contact form on the 3M web site and whilst they were quick to respond (probably 12 hours), the info they supplied was useless. I asked about retailers of the tapes in my area and they gave me 1 local and 2 interstate distributors... who I phoned and it seems they don't even stock the products. Pfft. Getting a StewMac shielding kit would cost me ~A$20 to buy and ship down here in 3 weeks. In the scheme of things, that's probably not too bad, I guess... So, I'll probably go that route... ....but I'm majorly about yet ANOTHER on-line face of a major company that hasn't a clue about their distribution/retailing arms...

Maybe a dingo ate their shielding tape... Sorry that didn't work. I'm not sure how it works down there, but up here most of the larger electrical\electronic supply houses for industrial contractors carry shielding tape with a conductive adhesive. I know this because some of the packaging equipment we had at Pepsi had this in their PLC cabinets...and I had to find it when a fork lift killed the panel box...but I digress... For laughs, try Ormsby Guitars in Australia. They stock all kinds of stuff, and if they don't have it they should be able to tell you where to find it down there. Good luck with the hunt. haven't gotten a chance to record some samples, but i played this at practice sunday and it sounded AWESOME i went with an "NOS" 3-way switch, so i can still get the in-between parallel tones
