 good day. I am wondering what my pickups are crackling for. I have done the complete shielding job here. I did it identical to my american series strat in my mexi strat. paint, ground into paint, and foil on the guard. Wiring is standard, just a wire bridging tone control to the mid and bridge pickups. I rewired my strat completely, all except the pickups themselves, the jack, switch wires and pot wires, capacitors. I checked all the solder joints today to make sure there wasnt anything to cause this problem. It looked ok. Could it possibly be an error on my part when I soldered the output jack? Maybe theres wire touching the input jack or not soldered well, or grounded well, I dunno.... any help is appreciated. the problem happens when the guitar is just sitting there, or touched or played, nothing has an affect on the crackling..... it does what it wants.... thanks all!

Anybody have input? I checked all the wiring inside today. it seems that the crackling is coming from somewhere in there. just cant figure it out
?

Welcome to the Nuts! There's lots of problems that could cause noises like that. You'll need to do some detective work to narrow it down. Try the following questions, it might lead you to an answer, or if you post the results here, someone else might have a view: Does it make any difference which pickup is selected? - if so suspect pickup or switch connections Do the vol or tone controls affect it? (turn the volume to zero, does it go away? - if not, suspect jack connection) Does it crackle more AS you turn the volume or tone? - if so, suspect the pot itself Take the pick guard/controls/pickups out of the guitar, youll get more hum, but does the crackling stop? - if so, suspect some wiring is touching the shielding In case of some problem with your shielding and grounding - check this; the SOURCE for all good advice on this subject: good luck John |

one method is to disconnect all of the pots, etc. and run jumpers from the PU to the output. if that's OK, add the volume. if that's ok, the tone, etc. takes some patience but it's fairly idiot-proof. being an idiot, i should know!

It may be too early to give a judgment, but I think if it's a crackling sound and there is no bad soldering, most probably it is a bad wire (i.e. the wire is broken inside its own insulation) somewhere inside or partially damaged pickup winding.
