I couldn't find anything in the forum on this so here's the skinny. These HRD's have too much power! And too much headroom! I'm not an amp tech and I keep finding conflicting ideas on the internet. I don't have any specific questions at the moment but I would like to start a dialogue on this subject. If anyone has any experience with using 6V6's in their HRD let me know what you think. Ah, and I do have a question; what are the chances that I can burn something up in my amp by doing this?

bean, What you'll find out is that you're getting tired of carting around the world's heaviest low-watt amp. I did that with one of my Twin Reverbs, several years ago, and one morning I woke up with a back ache, and started putting two and two together.... Why not let the amp go to someone who needs (?) that kinda power, and splurge on a Blues Jr..... that is, if you like the Fender tone. Even at that size (15 watts, single 12") it has gen-u-wine spring reverb, as well as a gain stage. Mojo on tap, so to speak. Otherwise, amps with 6L6's usually have a higher B+ voltage for those output tubes, and the HRD is no exception. Sadly, 6V6's can't take that much voltage, not without some mods to the circuit. Hence my suggestion above. HTH sumgai

bean, Good pitch, wrong target! Got a couple of older Fender Twins now, as well as a pickup-full of newer stuff. Sorry! Is the craigslist in your area worthwhile? sumgai

If there's a good shop in your immediate vicinity you might want to try and do a consignment through them.
This has two advantages, one, it gets people looking at your amp that want to buy an amp...and it also gives you an in to buy the next amp as the shop has no out of pocket expense, makes money both ways and would generally be in a better mood to cut you a deal on your new amp.

does this amp have 4 power tubes? Maybe you can remove 2 of them for 1/2 power like I did with my bassman 100. Sumgai knows if this is possible and kosher.

bean,
In my experience, the only reason a used item doesn't sell is either it's completely crapped out, or it's priced too high. Being a Fender amp, and if it's not a pile of junk that looks like it fell off the back of a truck, then there's only one thing left to ponder......

Sumgai, I didn't take you for the type to assume... If I had a digital camera I'd take a picture of it. All the tolex is in great shape. No rust, it has been used though. I was asking $400. I live in a Rural area of WV. There just aren't many folks around here that play and a lot of them still think they need 100 watt marshall.

bean, Oh I make assumptions all right, and I usually base them on experience. Sometimes I fail, but not too often any more. Me personally, I'd think 400 bananas would be a fine price for an HRD, but our first mutual problem is that I'm on the other side of the country - I have no idea what things are worth in WV. This is why craigslist exists. eBay is also good for a broader outreach, but many buyers there are slow to bid if your reserve is pretty close to the fair market value. If you are located in a "smaller town", you may have to consider advertising in a larger, and more distant, metro area. I don't know your type of music, but you may have to approach county players who want/need that clean Fender tone. That's about all I can think of just now...... Good Luck! sumgai

I'm not selling the amp. I'm trying the 6V6's. Just keep an eye on the tubes for the first several minutes of playing, not just idling with no input. If they don't glow red, then you're probably good to go. If you hear non-pleasing distortion at only a moderate level, and the tubes aren't glowing red, then you can probably adjust the bias to clean things up. If it doesn't get dirty until pretty durn loud, then I'd say you've hit the jackpot. ;D HTH sumgai

Try JJ 6V6 tubes in there. They can handle the higher voltage. I have a Fender Blues Deluxe that I used JJ 6V6's in and it works great. It breaks up earlier and drops the headroom down a little. But it does sound nice and my neighbor does not call the cops as much.lol
