wiring suggestions

Had planned to build a mahogany warmoth p90 this summer, but between budget, vacation, and gigs (at least gigs made the list it's becoming clear that it won't happen until fall at earliest-

So I figured I would use this time to consider all of the mods that I've heard over the years to see if I can come up with some pretty unusual, usable sounds and I'm starting with the following list- I think I’ve come up with a very unusual but hopefully useful combinations and would like your opinions on the potential timber, wiring intricacies, and of course your suggestions on pups themselves-

The purpose would be the regular P90 work, blues, 60s rock with a little more flexibility than the regular 3 way

At this point I am considering an L5S body routed HSH or PSP I’m leaning towards P90 routing to use the real things- But using phat cats or bluesbucker with hum routing would give me more options in the case I’ve designed a dog and have to drop back to humbuckers.

Here’s the real kicker- I want to look at a SC dual rails pup in the center with it’s own 5 way parallel to the p90s that are on their own 5 way- Yes, I know it’s weird, and we’re talking about 2 knife switches right next to each other, but here’s what I’m imagining-

P90 Switch
1. Bridge
2. Bridge+neck parallel
3. Bridge + neck series
4. Bridge + neck series out of phase
5. Neck

SC dual rail switch
1. Off
2. single coil that is hum complimentary to bridge P90
3. Full SC rail with spin a split
4. Single coil that is hum complimentary to neck P90
5. P90s off, full SC rail with spin a split

So many of these combinations look really interesting to me, but besides the obvious question of is it even possible, what do you think this would sound like?

Am I reinventing the wheel? Has anyone done this before?

Do you think that the rail single coils would actually hum cancel with a p90?

I can imagine some of the wiring, but is it possible to invert phase off of a standard 5 way as I’ve listed for #4 on the P90s (I’ve got a friend who gets a great sound with a tele and PAF with toggles and hoping the combination might be similar)-

I think the off position for the SC rail (#1) is a no brainier, but what about position # 5 where it would have to break the P90s output and provide both coils of the SC rail? Haven’t even come close to that one yet-

Anyway, no rush, I’ve got most of the summer to think about it

Also to ease swithing I had considered putting prefered combinations at the same position which would be less intuitive, but easier to switch on the fly-

SC dual rail switch
1. single coil that is hum complimentary to bridge P90
2. Off
3. Full SC rail with spin a split
4. P90s off, full SC rail with spin a split
5. Single coil that is hum complimentary to neck P90

You will find a very clever 3 pup design that would be over the top awsome with 3 P90s. I want to do this with a Jag style bod and 3 90s.

Significantly you can combine any of the three in series to obtain a killer humbucker type sound in system Series. You should persue a 3 pup set with a RWRP mid pup, like most strat pups today - to obtain maximum hum cancelling options There is another thread on p90s in the pickups section to give you mfg. options.

P90s are already beefier than strat singles, so two in series are likely to be frightening. I am very curious about the mid/bridge combo in series.

Look for Master John Hewitt's three pup design. yea h sure there are more toggles, but basically three just replace the limited 5 way, yet give you all pup combos. It is just 3 mini's for the pups and one for the system series/parallel. In/out of phase is optional and can be a push/pull.

Thanks Rune Walker! Very intersting thread and expect it would be a very good way to accomplish what I am after- Yes, I hear the series might be very hot, but really looking forward to the series out of phase-

But I have a pretty strong desire to do this with two 5way blades , so I took a shot at the first part my self- Sorry it's neither a real wiring diagram or schematics, but expecting those that understand what I'm trying can read through it-

Would appreciate if anyone can confirm this is a good circuit for the first part of my project using a 5way 4 pole super switch, or suggest alternatives for these combinations? This is just the p90 circuit as I need to get it right before I go to the other 5 way-

Well, I have what you might be looking for, although this thread is fairly old by now, so you've probably figured it all out by now. I worked on a mod like this with "Bergermeister" in the old GN1 forum. It involves 2 superswitches side by side. That would be a very expensive option, but when it got designed we thought it gave a lot of really good options. With two super switches, we had different combinations of bridge and middle, I believe it ewnt like this:

Where + is parallel, x is series, and [] is phased. Then on the second switch it added in the neck pickup to those combinations in different ways. We also had it worked out so that the second switch acted as a master switch so that whenever it was in the neck position you got the neck pickup, regardless of where the first switch was, and whenever it was in the bridge position, you got the bridge pickup, regardless of switch 1. That gives you what's probably your two most used sounds right where you're used to having them. The schematic could be adjusted pretty simply to combine neck and bridge on the first switch and add middle in on the second one. Or if you've been keeping up to date with the Tone Monster thread, they've got some great rotary switch ideas for humbuckers that you could apply to the dual rail. They were using, I believe a 3P5T rotary switch. That could easily be applied to a 4P5T superswitch if you really wanted it to be. Then you could just add something else to add the middle pickup into the mix, a blend pot or something would be cool. I posted the diagram for the final design that I came up with, which has all the combos listed on it, (I think). It also has a neck/bridge phaser. It can phase either the neck or the bridge but not both. I think I have written down that the 6PDT switch in that system is a toggle, but I have found that there is a 6PDT rotary switch that would probably be easier to find. I haven't prototyped it, but I think bergermeister was going to do that, so if he's around on here, maybe he could let me know how it went.

Ok, so throughout the day today I had a little go at what you wanted and I think I may have come up with something. Have a look at this and see if it works right.

The issue with your diagram, zionstrat is that P90 2 has both of it's sides hard wired together, or so it appears, so you'd never get any sound out of that pickpup. See:
