Do you have a test meter - specifically an ohm meter?

looked on seymour duncans website, they reckon black is live, red and white can be taped together (coil tappable) and green and bare are both earth. Does this sound right?

lostjoey The color codes for pickups are NOT standard. I'm sure ALL Seymour Duncan pickups have their own standard. But DiMarzio has its own color codes and all the other pickup companies have theirs. Since you don't know which company made those pickups, you'll be starting from scratch.
You should have a test meter. HOWEVER, you can solve it by trial and error. First determine which pairs of wires work as single coils. That is to say, try connecting the black and red wires to the output. (You don't have to solder these temporary connections. Alligator "jumper clips" are handy for this.) Let's suppose black and red produce no sound. Then try black and green. No sound? Then try black and white. Let's suppose black and white do produce a sound. Then we know that the other pair of wires - red and green - will also produce a sound. I'm just guessing, but I'd say the other humbucker works the same way. Still if you want to test the other one, go ahead. When you know which pairs of wires produce sounds, make a posting. There's still a bit more to do but no sense adding to this already lengthy posting.
