Hi all, I am new to the forum and new to the art/science/voodoo guitar electronics. I have been really thinking about replacing the pickups in my strat with some Texas Specials and was looking around on the web when I hit the Guitarnuts site. I read through the some of the tips and mods and such and felt pretty good about the whole thing. I got home and popped the pickguard off to take a look and was confronted with quite a mess. I got my strat from a pawn shop and it has a Rose trem that I now think was added after the fact. The ground wire was twisted together and then soldered to the volume pot. So needless to say I think some of the things that I don't like sound wise like are definitely fixable. My first (of many ) questions has to do with the mid tone pot. The diagrams and pictures that I have seen all seem to show a single pot for each knob on the guitar, but in my case the mid tone pot appears to have another pot "stacked" on top of it. There is a resistor and what looks like simply a single wire that are connected to both pots. This has thrown my small amount of knowledge out of the window since I haven't seen anything like that in my research. Can anyone tell me what the deal is with that and should I leave it that way or simply replace it with a regular one. I am thinking that, unless there is a really good reason not to, I would prefer to just replace it as part of quieting the beast which I plan to do now. I am also curious about what looks like an additional ground wire running from the center of the neck tone pot to the 5 way switch. In looking at the diagrams I can see the two wires that are referred to as the "ground loop" wires that are supposed to be removed as part of the quieting procedure, however I haven't seen anything about this additional wire. It is soldered into the same connection point as the loop wires. I can take some pictures and get them out where you can see them if that would help. Sorry for the length of this but as I said I am new to this type of thing. I have been interested in learning about this kind of stuff for awhile and I really appreciate that there are people who are willing to help out a newbie. Thanks in advance. Cliff

The stacked tone pot is probably what Fender call the TBX tone pot. Do you feel a notch when you turn it from 5 either forwards or backwards?
It has two different frequencies that is controls the attenuation of the signal over. One at between 1-5 (attenuates treble) and another between 5-10 (attenuates bass).
You can consider it a single normal pot and ignore everything else.
