HB--->Tone---->Vol---->this switch--->3-way pickup selector---->output Doesn't that switch need to come right after the HB?

Ignore my last post. I'm going to order a Bill Lawrence L-290SL. Dose that sound right? Sounds like what I want, but only from what I read.
I want to save the P90's for my stock IBZ AM73 that will need some work later. This JTK is my chance to use a SC.
I've looked ,but seems hard to even find a simple diagram for a HB & SC let alone any mods.
Can you guys go ahead get me started with wiring? * I'm not looking for anything too wild. * I want it to sound like it should with a 3 way switch * I want to split the HB (I would like for my HB's N coil to work when split) * Parallel would be good. I get lost here so I trust your judgement about all this. * 1 Vol & 1 Tone ,but I could get one more pot it there & I also trust you all to give me a heads up on what is best.
I'll probably order some GTS pots for this and I'll need to know values on that too.I think I've only got one 500k here.
THANKS

With a master V & T only, pot value is always going to be a bit of a compromise between what works with your HB and what works best with the SC. I'd say 500K, a good value for the HB and if the SC is too bright for your tastes with it, you can always dial the tone knob back a bit. One wiring scheme for a HB plus SC is this one, from Deaf Eddie and reposted by me in our "design modules" section. This has the advantage (in a Tele) of using the std Strat 5-way switch so no modification to the cavity is needed for fitment. It also gives a series option, of a sort, in position 3 as well as splitting the HB, so I throw it out for your consideration. My selfish motive, in the interests of full disclosure- I've wanted someone to be the guinea pig with this wiring for some time. Here's the link and the diagram. guitarnuts2.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=modules&action=display&thread=3761

With a master V & T only, pot value is always going to be a bit of a compromise between what works with your HB and what works best with the SC. What do you think about using a 500k for the tone and a 250k for the volume? One wiring scheme for a HB plus SC is this one, from Deaf Eddie and reposted by me in our "design modules" section. This has the advantage (in a Tele) of using the std Strat 5-way switch so no modification to the cavity is needed for fitment. It also gives a series option, of a sort, in position 3 as well as splitting the HB, so I throw it out for your consideration. Interesting little beast. I've seen HB/SC strategies using a standard strat switch that put the SC in the middle position and had full HB at one end and split HB at the other end. Nice, but they causes a sequence where the lever position isn't as closely related to which pickup(s) is(are) being selected. The sequence here is more intuitive. Neck at one end, bridge at the other, combinations in between. One caveat with the drawing. The way the pickups and switch are oriented make for a nice clean drawing without wires crossing over one another. But the end of the switch that needs to be toward the tail of the guitar is at the top of the page.

newey , Interesting but I'm not sure I want to try to cut for a lever switch or would even have room to use one. Maybe a rotary switch?
That L-290SL will be just two wire right? It's a NF (stacked?) so not sure. Are these just stacked HB's? Anybody have these??

Three wires, actually. Black and white for signal and a blue wire for the plate ground. Yes. See pictures. I don't, but I have a clinical aversion to Telecasters... I do have the original Lawrence and Wilde pickups and for the money you can't beat them. Hope this helps. Happy Trails Cynical One

I've decided to put a P90 in the bridge. Sorry for starting this tread before I had my mind made up. I guess it still applies sense a P90 is a big SC.
I've been waiting because I did end up emailing about the Custom Series P90's from wildepickups.com. On their How To Order page they have an update that says they are Temporarily Discontinued, but I can go to the order page and hit buy? Should I go ahead and try to order one?? Anyone do it in last few weeks?
I haven't heard back on the email, but from what I've seen Bill is in bad health so understandable.
If I can't get a P90 from Bill then I'm probably going to get one from GFS. I've got a GFS Classic II neck pu and it's pretty freaking darn good.
I'm still going to need all the help I can get on how to wire it w/ my HB and have some good tone options.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME

Personally if your going with p90's and its already routed for hbs i'd go with either the dream 90 or the mean 90 from gfs. Their hb size so no need for a special mounting plate just use the old one. Keeps the dual hb look but gives you that s.c. sound too

Yeah I think one or other would be fine for me. Which one do you have and what can you tell me about it? I still kinda want one from Bill but if they don't have them then I'll be trying one from GFS.
I do love to hear a P90. I'm not sure I need the Mean or not.

Don't have either yet I'm afraid, but I've got plans to get a set of mean 9p's as soon as their back in stock. I've got an explorer clone I'm installing them in. As far as which one to choose it really depends on the overall sound your looking to get. I chose the means cause of their midrange and bottom end emphasis where as the dreams are more of a stratty s.c. sound.

I have a GFS Dream 90 in my travel guitar. Here's the thread about modding it with some sound samples: guitarnuts2.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=music&action=display&thread=5940If it's a real metal sound you want, the Dream 90s won't do that out of the box. But like most lower-output single coils, they take well to pedals for the crunchier stuff. I like the pup a lot. I've been a fan of GFS for quite a while. Of course, the sound clips from my travel guitar won't be like your guitar (and won't be like many others, either). There's not a lot of body resonace, obviously.

Thanks. They do sound good & I have been wanting some of that p90 tone for quite awhile. I was kinda waiting & thinking I'd put a set in a 10 year old like new IBZ AM73, but I dread starting because only f holes! Should look up Patrick Sweany. He's from here in Ohio and has p90 tone I love.Old school stuff.Always uses a big jazz boxes though. He will pluck a HB too on a few songs. This guy has some great stuff if you can find it to take a listen. Some old JLH always makes me want a P90 to. I don't know why, I just don't have the boogie in me for that but I love it! Anyway: Been doing some research and I'm pretty sure I'm putting a P90 in the bridge.I just need to look into rather the Dream or Mean would be a better match with a SP58(about 7.8K). I'm even thinking about going all P90 for this JTK. I hate to have a sp58 sitting not used but maybe I'll end up putting it in the am73 or just buy another gtr! I'm off work the next 5 days so will be dropping back in with questions. Might be better to start another thread when I make up my mind though. I also have a Gretsch I want to work on so you might hear about that.

I was just watching this and wanted to piss cynical1 off! HAHA I agree with you cynical1. I always like a warm smooth tone like you. I just wanted show even a Tele is cool sometimes. I know we already know that. I even hate the icepicks from my HB's!

And hey, Leo sold boatloads of Telecasters...so what do I know... but when I hear the word Telecaster this is the mental image I get... ...and I would rather drink turpentine and piss on a brush fire then listen to or play Country. It's me, I know, but I can live with that. HTC1

Still around ,just been thinking. I'm about to order some parts: * 1x CTS Stacked Dual Concentric Audio Pot 250K+500K ( 2 VOLUMES) and Stacked Metal Dome Knob Set-Chrome to fit. * 1x CTS 250K Audio Taper Pot ( TONE) I think I want to try 250k to drop some highs. * 1x CTS 300K Audio Taper Pot (backup TONE) Might use instead of the 250k if I don't like or keep for another project. I'll wait a day or two before I order so I can see what ya all think. I'm going with a HB size P90 in the bridge and my IBZ Super58 HB in the neck. A 3 way pup switch & an on/on/on mini for series/tap/parallel. If that sounds good then I'll probably be deciding on the dream or mean 90 from GFS. Might put a GFS 11 3/8" x 19 1/4" Uncut Pickguard Sheet on the order. Almost tempted to strip & refinish this butterscotch blond before I even start I almost feel like I know how to wire this. If I get cocky I will make a diagram for you to fix! FYI: Thinking 250K pots and maybe my .047 Sozo's or Org Drops on Tone because I tend to turn my tone down. My gtr tone control stays in the 1st 33% 99% of the time. I know some of it may be my gear and other things but I'd like a little control with a tone pot. To me a Tone pot has always been pretty much like a 3 way switch.

Ok wow nevermind, I can thank u all for making me work it out on my own. I will do it all with some research. So much knowledge on this forum but I can't get close to matching it. I'll order some crap and see where I get. I'll get it working

Ok whats your current control setup I need to know details as to how many pots, switches, switch types, and what are you looking for sound wise exactly???

eadgber-
Sorry no one got back to you on this. Your ideas about the pot values are sound.
As far as the uncut pickguard sheet, it's tough to cut holes for pickups without the right tools- I've ruined a lot of plastic trying to do it by hand! For about $25, Warmoth will custom make one, you can specify whatever pickup combos you want in it. It's more $$ if you want the fancy pearloid or metallic materials, however.
We'll be happy to help along the way here- no one was purposely dissing you by not replying promptly.

We'll be happy to help along the way here- no one was purposely dissing you by not replying promptly. I know it Newey. That last post of mine was started from my ignorance which led to frustration. Too many sips of vodka didn't add any intelligence to it either. I've gotten nothing but good help here! I was flipping from site to site looking at diagrams & trying to use what applies to draw my own diagram of what I think I'm trying to do. Just wasn't working out. Still going to try but back to 6 days a week so short on time. it's tough to cut holes for pickups without the right tools- I've ruined a lot of plastic trying to do it by hand! Thank you for the heads up. I have never cut one. I made one out of maple that is maybe a little thicker than 1/8th inch. It's in the picture on this tread. If I try the pickguard sheet I would pretty much just be tracing the Jet king's but maybe with some design that goes up between the HB rings. It would not be around the pups. Ok whats your current control setup I need to know details as to how many pots, switches, switch types, and what are you looking for sound wise exactly??? Well the gtr just sets with the super58 in the neck right now. It's an Ibanez Jet king 1. Nice body, nice neck & nice neck pup. Has a good 3 way pup switch that I plan to reuse. I want gts pots & have some mirror backward on/on/on mini switches for series/tap/parallel. I was looking at the CTS Stacked Dual Concentric Audio Pot 250K+500K so I could have the 500 vol for neck HB & 250 for the bridge p90 vol. Then 1 250k for tone. sound wise? Hard for me to say. I hate to fight ANY highs but mud stinks too. Very hard to find sometimes! I only use fingers so that makes a huge difference

Ok the 3way is it a blade or a toggle? I noticed you said ibanez which leads me toward a blade but I've seen a few with toggles too. So are you going gibson style four pots or is it just strat style three?

OK, for some reason I was thinking Strat here. So forget what I said about pickguards, if you have to have a custom shape done that will cost considerably more.
Although the cost may equalize out if you have to buy tooling to cut your own.
Best way I've found is a scroll saw with a blade for composites/plastics. I don't have one, but I had a friend who did. Unfortunately, using the past tense because he has died.
You need a thin blade like on a scroll saw to be able to make decent turns to radius the corners. I have done this by hand by drilling holes where the corner radii were, then using a (hand) coping saw to connect the holes.
After some ruined material, I did get one that was acceptable enough that someone looking at it from 5 feet away wouldn't notice how hacked-up it is. But I know how bad it is every time I look at that guitar. . .
There is a tool called a "laminate router" used for shaping Formica™ for countertops and such. They can be found for about $50 at any of the big box home improvement stores. I have often thought that one of those would work, if I was ever to need to cut enough guards to justify the tool cost. I figure you'd screw the guard down to a piece of plywood or other scrap, drill a starter hole, and rout out the shape you need.
These are essentially lightweight hand-held routers, so a regular router with an appropriate bit would probably work as well. Same technique as above- screw it down to some wood. I'd drill the holes for the pickup screws first, and use those to hold the center of the material down; using just the guard-mounting screws along the edges may result in the material "chattering" in the center as you rout it.
Someone else may have better ideas for this, I'm certainly no expert based on my two forays into cutting a guard.

Ok for once I'm at a loss on the controls, I could recomend a varitone circuit though. As far as cutting a pick guard from a black the easiest wat is a variable speed dremel with a router attachment the attachment can be had at walmart for around $12 and includes 3 bits(or at least it did when I got mine).
