stipped and reapinted a squire tele. in the process, decided to rewire and replace the pickups. rewired to exact mfg. specs. tone is great, but volume also acts like a tone.that is to say, the guitar is always live. Any ideas what went wrong?it has me quite frustrated, and moreso perplexed.

Sounds like the "ground" wire on the volume control is disconnected.

It sound like somehow you got the capacitor attached to the volume pot. The only difference in a "volume" and" tone" pot is that the tone pot has a capacitor wired to it to roll off high frequencies when it is turned down. Double check that there is not a jumper wire connecting the volume pot to the capacitor. Also what sort of wiring configuration are you using this may be helpful in trying to help. Peace Damian

i followed the schematics from fender to a tee.i have two single coils, a threeway switch, and two 500k pots. i used single thread copper wires(with the exception of the leads from the pups).shielded each cavity, and even went through the trouble to ground everything individualy.

there is a .001 cap between lug1(hot in) to lug2(hot to jack).but it is positioned as it should be via fender schematics for the guitar.could this be the problem even if it is normal specs?

Is that the volume pot lugs your talking about? I dont know what that would be for except for a bleed type "master volume" If you give a little more info it would help. Double and triple check the wiring on the volume pot. As I was saying if the volume pot is not hooked up correctly it will act as a tone pot. Do you have a wire from the 5 way switch to the volume? That should I believe be the first lug on the left, you should also have a hot from the jack and a ground from the jack. Im not sure without looking of the positioning of the last two. But double check all wiring going from and to the volume pot as that is where your problem is. Also before you put the gaurd back on test every thing by lightly tapping the pickup with a screwdriver or something. This will save you a ton of time. I know from experience. Also put electric tape inbetween EVERYTHING often times this can cause trouble. Though it dosnt sound like that is what your problem is. Just chek chek and check again the wiring to the volume pot. I was having a hell of a time trying to do a mod when I found I had the leads to the jack mixed up AHHHHH. Good luck, let me know how your doing. Peace Damian

Try diconecting that cap on the volume pot just to see what happens.

i believe you are correct in that being a bleed master volume.i don't understand why they would wire it that way. far as i can tell, its making a connection it shouldn't. i think i'm gonna remove that compacitor all together and see if that fixes it.i'll post results in a day or two. i'm also gonna triple check each connection while i'm at it.by the way, i already experienced the backwards leads on the jack. when i first plugged it in, it had some serious hum and would get louder the closer to the stings(or other metal surfaces) you would get.once i switched them, it cleared up all the probs but the one i'm now asking about. Nothing like clearing up one prob by creating a new one, eh!
