I have a telecaster "lipstick" style neck pickup for a project guitar. I read that the white wire is hot and the black is for ground. Is this right? Also JUST to be sure, hot means + and ground means - right? all help is appreciated!

black tends to be ground.if you have a multimeter, touch the lead to the white and the other to ground.it should read 7-9 ohms(or so). touch the black and ground and it should read bout half the first.if so, white is your hot.if the pickup is a factory fender, then white is almost always white on a single coil. i assume by "lipstick" you mean a soapbar single coil cased is steel.most likely stacked.btw, single coil pickups need to be grounded much better than a humbucker.hums can be grounded to shielding, but most singles need the gound to bridge to operate quietly.as far as the +- thing, i don't know for sure, but it sounds good to me. later
