A friend brought me a Fender Super Reverb amp which was in a small house fir which has suffered smoke damage. Amp chassis still plays, but how to remove the stink and black to get into condition to replace caps and use?? The amp didn't suffer from heat damage and the case has been cleaned well and is acceptable to the owner.

Greetings, "liz" and welcome to Guitarnutz2!
Getting rid of the stink and the black will be no easy task. Smoke from a house fire has all sorts of strange organic compounds in addition to the soot which is mostly carbon. Any solvent that would be effective on a wide range of oily organic compounds would likely melt plastic. So you would need to be concerned about causing damage. Water based cleaners with detergent and ammonia can be affective, but the water in the cleaner and the water you would use to rinse it, won't be so great. Water + electronics = problems. So forced drying would be necessary. Another concern would be moving the "gunk" from accessible surfaces to hard to reach crevices where it might cause an even greater problem when the amp is powered up. Indiscriminant use of cleaners might make things better in terms of overall look and smell, but worse in terms of creating resistive paths that could arc when high voltages are applied.
I really don't know what to suggest, other than maybe research into what fire reclamation companies use for use on high voltage electronic devices.
Best of luck.

...strange...most people experience problems when the smoke gets OUT A bath in commercial 'contact cleaner' sounds like what maybe necessary here... ...do any of you guys (BTW) remember ever seeing a video of an operating TV set being dunked in a fishtank full of some wonder cleaning liquid.. clear stuff but also (presumably!) non-conductive... ..I remember it, but from where I have no clue... must be an age thing..

Another friend of mine-a lizard can have friends!- suggested to try Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner. I have, and only on metal so far, and it WORKS WELL ! Spray, wait 3-5 min's and wipe off. Wearing gloves is strongly suggested. Smoke is gone and so is smell. But only tried on chassis metal so far. I will update as I continue. Bill
