I finished up another project , this one's my take on the La Cabronita. It's a 2- piece Alder body, Tobacco sunburst. 2-piece Maple on Maple neck; 25" scale with a 12" radius fretboard. I used the Gretsch Filtertrons on this one; I can't believe I haven't "discovered" the 'Trons before now. I'm blown away by the tone of these pups & I easily see this as becoming my go to guitar. Wow!........... Straight forward wiring, 3- way toggle, 1 volume & 1 tone with 500K pots & a .047 cap. Here's a few shots....... That's about it for now. I have a couple more on my workbench but not nearly finished yet. Thanks fer lookin' -lpf3

Man, you're just churning these things out. Looks very nice and I like the idea of dropping the Filtertrons in there. Very original idea.
Guess I need to drag out the old +1 dispenser again.
So, inquiring minds want to know...when's the first non-Telecaster coming out?
Another great guitar, man. Did you ever get any feedback from Little Leo on the first guitars?
Happy Trails

The bridge is kinda ugly, but it's probably a good design, tonally.
I like the look of the controls without a plate.
Maple board minus dots looks good, but seems like it would be easy to get lost. Do you have small dots on the top edge of the neck?
Ditto on the +1, Cyn.

cynical1 wrote:Thanks, I wish it was my original idea but it's not. Fender has a couple different models of La Cabronitas with 1 or 2 Filtertrons & basically the same rear routed controls. The idea caught on with some of the guys at TDPRI & some have built similar guitars. I dunno......... my trouble is that I like Teles as much as you don't. But, the world doesn't need yet another Tele builder & I've been messing around trying to come up with an original shape ; so far I haven't come up with anything that I like. I'm a traditionalist, I guess - another shape that I really like is the '50's Les Paul Jr.'s with double cutaways. In the end I will probably try to mash a few thing together. Then there's always the offsets......... Yes, he took the first one around to some of his cronies in New York, some pro players ,& vintage/boutique guitar dealers- all of whom had a lot of positive stuff to say. Very inspiring, to say the least . He's back in L.A. now & he's getting similar responses out here........... No orders yet, but there's some interest; at this point I'm gonna stay in the shop where I can't hurt anything & let my Promotional Networking Department do the rest. And to think that all these years I thought I had kids so that someone else would take the trash out....... funny world sometimes. ;D reTread wrote:I was hoping that I was the only one who noticed. ;D I like the (perceived?) clarity of the brass saddles but I don't like the looks of the bridge. I liked it when I bought it but in hindsight I wish it was a Tune-O-Matic or a wraparound. By the time I decided that, I had already drilled the string thru holes & the mounting screws; so I was committed. Live & learn......... Ditto the looks of the controls without a plate. Yes, I used the small dots on the edge. It was my son Leo's idea to go without the fretboard dots because he likes the clean look, & so do I, now. I was leery at first but it's surprisingly easy to get used to & the dots on the edge are more than enough. Thanks for the thoughts & the interest, guys. -lpf3

I personally hate the look of a maple fretboard, especially after I get my grubby hands on it! This one, with no inlays and nothing on the headstock just looks completely unfinished (as in "not done yet") to me. Different tastes, I guess.
The rest of it is pretty sweet, though! I actually dig the bridge. Like the Tele "ashtray" thing, but without the pickup surround.

There's a nice bit of interaction between string pairs on that kind of bridge. You lose that with individual saddles. Wraparounds are really my fave. Tunos, not so much. All things considered, I think this bridge suits the guitar. I suppose you could put a cover on it. But that always seems like putting a bag over a butterface.

It looks great. I luv a sunburst 'tele'.
I have similar barrel tail pieces on my shergold. The trouble is, you cant intonate properly particularly the 3rd and 4th strings sharing a barrel, which always need a step in the setting, one being plain and the other wound.

There is a step on the middle saddle, John. Nice work. The maple does need sealing or grub will.

The trouble is, you cant intonate properly particularly the 3rd and 4th strings sharing a barrel, which always need a step in the setting, one being plain and the other wound. Recall that when the original Esquire hit the scene (at the NAMM show in 1950), no player was even contemplating using a plain 3rd string - every string maker produced a wound G of no less than 0.020 gauge, and more often it was either 0.026 or 0.028, depending on whose name was on the wrapper. (Tin, in Aussie-speak. ) Since that time, neither Leo nor his followers have seen fit to permanently re-tool the bridge saddles. Granted, Fender has used one-per-string saddles on certain Tele models from time to time, but by and large, they stick with the Gospel as told by Leo, right at the get-go. HTH sumgai

There isn't enough detail in the pix to tell, but I think all three of these saddles might have 'steps'. If so, the E/A and B/e would have the step closer to the bridge for the lower (pitched) string and the D/G would have the step closer to the bridge for the higher string. I guess - another shape that I really like is the '50's Les Paul Jr.'s with double cutaways. I like those too. Might look nice with a maple neck. Very non-Gibson thought, but still...

It does take some getting used to although now that I've done 2 that way it's starting to look normal. I agree on the headstock though, I don't even have the decal on yet & that does help to give it a little something. They do have steps. I haven't finished setting this guitar up yet but I have that bridge on another guitar & it intonates fine. Probably not perfect, but plenty close. Heh, heh, I just found & downloaded the Les Paul double cut plans in PDF file this morning ; I'm thinking Mary Kaye White w/ a maple neck might look great. Who knows.........? -lpf3

Yes! I've loving the DC Paul done in Mary Kaye White. My heart may burst if you make any more of these beauties....
