I frequently see the word "tapped" used inconsistently when referring to splittling the coils, or more accurately, cutting one coil of a humbucker.
Some say that is tapping the humbucker.
The definition of tapping I have seen related to pups is usually applied to a single coil. The coil windings are "tapped" at different lengths to yield vintage or hotter sounds. I have read about one musician that had six separate "taps" to each single coil pup on his guitar, giving, at least to his ears, or imagination, 6 separate sounds.
Any thoughts?

Yes, traditionally "tapping" meant a separate wire run from partway through the coil, for less but clearer and brighter output. As tapped pickups became less popular, the term "tapping" became synonymous in COMMON usage with coil splitting. That's kinda sorta not TOO wrong - you're "tapping a humbucking pickup" if you consider the bucker as one entity. But I like clarity of language, and "splitting" is the better term for this. Besides, maybe true tapping will come back in a big way someday...

Taps is what you play at a funeral. They also provide water, and Eddie Van Halen built his career off them.

I think tapping is what you do in a tap dance.

I think this discussion got way out of hand very quickly and it's all my fault. XD

well, this is the 21st century; anything could happen  Ah, indeed. I was actually impressed with how thorough the list was, but, still, the idea of geeky, white bread with mayo white boys trying to talk black is a lot like this video I found . . . gprime.net/video.php/howtodancelikeawhiteguyCheck it out and you'll see what I mean. Make sure you have the sound turned on. You don't want to miss this. Chesh

Thanks for the link. I will file it with my collection of bumper stickers that read:
