Fender can't stop mining their past for ideas. Having run through their successes, they're now working on reissuing their failures as well. That's all I can figure about the recent reissue of the "Antigua" finished guitars. This was an idea they had back during the CBS era, in the late 1960s. Nobody wanted this finish back then, and the Antigua option disappeared after a few years. For a while, just about any guitar they made could be had with the "Antigua" look. The reissues, however, are limited to A Tele, A Strat and a P-bass from the FSR series. For our younger members, here's the not-so-classic Antigua look:  Preorder one now! Or not . . .  |

Age the chrome and that would look really nice! I don't know the history of Fender ... whether that be due to age, or lack of care in their product line, but a lot of ideas that all companies had seem to 'pop up' again in the next era. "Well, it didn't work this year, lets try again in 10  " |

Ohhh...that's a bad look, I remember that. I don't know why they do this kind of thing. Still, it's only a matter of time before Gibson bring backs the dreaded can-opener I mean "corvus"....  You know they actually reissued the RD which I ahd a brief infatuation with back in the day... What was kind of cool, though better with the headstock around the right way (perhaps like a firebird for heritage sakes), was Gibson's MII...I use to love the idea of that thing thing, but couldnt afford it...played brilliantly with obvious fender features and trick wiring and HBs and all. Too much 80's fashion to be a long term success, but compared to other gutiars (pre PRS, etc) it was a great move...market failure. So 'great' they are unlikely to fix the fads and re-release that great fenderesque guitar. Fender I thought ahd more taste, but they have had some stunning failures and I can see some coming back unfortunately...the antiqua at least was only a 'finsih' disaster, but what motivates these people I simply don't know! |

I actually really like the look of that. Not sure if there's something I'm missing, but judging by the picture alone, I'd be very happy with one. The again, I've still got a hankering for an Ovation Breadwinner, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.  I'm a bit of a Neo-Traditionalist as far as this stuff goes. I love the neck and body styles of the Strat and Tele, but the colors/finishes don't particularly woo me. PUT THE TORCHES DOWN!!! - I hate Tortoise pickguards. I think they look like someone wiped a baby diaper on a guitar. Occasionally I don;t mind one on a white guitar, but mostly it makes me cringe. - I generally don't care for any of Fenders burst finishes. Brown, different brown, piss-yellow, reddish brown. Does nothing for me. There is the occasional "shades of brown" burst that I like okay, but not for the most part. I DESPISE the brown/red/yellow 60's Japanese burst. - I think Mint Green as a pickguard color is an absolutely bizarre idea. It had to have come about as the result of drugs: "Okay, what should we offer as standard pickguard colors?" "Black" "Yep, good old standard. Next?" "White" "Absolutely. Next?" "Tortoise-shell." "Looks like semi-chunky diarrhea, but people like it, and it's pretty traditional, okay. Next?" "How about a pearlescent white?" "Great idea! Next?" "Cream and Pearlescent Cream" "Cream is good, yep. Next?" "Let's offer about 5 shades of not-quite-white and call them different names just to screw with people. That way when someone orders 'bone white,' 'parchment,' 'aged,' 'parchment,' or 'ivory,' we just grab whatever is available and assure them that it is the standard color." "GENIUS! Okay, any more suggestions? Lebowski, you've been awfully quiet.. any ideas?" "Wha... huh?" "Standard pickguard colors... ideas?" "Did anyone say 'Purple' yet?" "We're not doing purple." "What's wrong with purple?" "Nothing is wrong with purple, but we're looking for colors that will go with most finishes that we can keep a large stock of, on hand..." "Fine. Green." "NOT green...." "Jezz... okay, MINT green." "Are you high?" "Yes... and so are 50% of your demographic..." "Good point. Mint Green it is." - Butterscotch/blonde looks to me like someone dipped a guitar in some runny tapioca pudding or just ran out of paint after the first coat and said "Eff it, it's done." Give me an offset guitar in Daphne or Pellham blue any day. Okay, did I manage to offend almost everyone yet? |

I'm not normally a big fain of Paisley, but that's a beautiful guitar!
I'm a fool for a maple neck and fretboard.

See....there are all kinds of fenders... A crappy 'wildwood' (actually the tree was dyed as it grew to make this stuff) on an also crappy ''colorado" mixed with a 12 string neck...  How about they bring back the fender 'swinger' a model made of parts that failed and had to be used up...so they cut a chunck out of the body and didn't shape the peghead...coool...or not...  There are so many of these things, sometimes done through expediency, often from being out of touch with the market, sometimes through some kind of 'delusion' or sense of 'competition. The paisley was/is made from wallpaper and 'paisley' was a hip pattern at the time...so of course...and the old pickguard colours and such, you need to put it in context of what was available at the time you know, back then when traditions were set, there were not the options of teday, plastics were in it's infancy.....kitchen appliances were still often that weird 'mint green' remember, the 'white' of it's time. People will see things the same way, often faster, about the 'fashions' and choices of today I know. I'm a bit of a sucker for the fender starcaster and gibson's semi Les Paul Signiture myself, but they never seem to think aobut bringing these kinds of things back, perhaps with a few mods to fix the originals 'errors' rather than scrap the whole thing. But it works both ways too, the 'market' and present 'fads' push the market far more. They will often 'surf' the waves of fads and make things and hype them even more to meet those percieved 'demands'. The corvus (can you see how it is supposed to look like a 'crow' in flight...don't worry, few do) is a bit of a running joke but fenders made some bad ones too. The 'Breadwinner I actually like and have played, a precursor to things like the 'klien' it bombed but perhaps the first 24 fretter and balanced well, active electronics and lots of interesting features, not all worked out the best, though as a 'shape' actually works well and certainly can look a bit 'different'! Whatever one might come up with, it will date I am sure. Fluro swirl...next...mat black (goth style)...meh... It's all like any fashion and it's followers, everything tends to 'date' I guess. Check out clothes and other aspects of 'fashion' and always take things in the context of the times and what was possible with materials and how people saw them then compared to now. With the era from which the electric guitar was born, this was a time of change and the new...we live in strange times now, it seems to me, but in many ways more 'conservative' and much less individualistic and fashion concious than those times...despite technology and options developing so much faster. So, we see the rise of the 'vintage' and the traditional or the superficial and the influence of the 'mojo' and peer pressure and lore to direct the wants in things. It does not just apply to things like guitars that's for sure. But hey, don't mind me, I am likely jaded and old to be missing the optimisim of the past and all that sprung from it or too cynical to see it if it's around these days...hmmm |

Yessir, the paisley was in the era of hippie goodness and I think in today's time it has been brought back through Brad Paisley him self.
I remember when I was looking for my first electric, I saw a Fender pink paisley, it was 700$, so wasn't a reissue or anything. I really wanted it, had them put the guitar on hold, but as is life, it didn't go my way. I've yet to see another paisley design on a standard fender.
And all companies have had tons of duds, Gibson has a a lot of skeletons in the closet and I think the robot guitar will follow soon.

It's hard to shake off the association with Burton and Elvis...it may have been reissued a few times over the years. I don't think anyone was keen on the antiqua though at the time, so can't understand why anyopne would bring it back  |

I LOVE the Fender Swinger... if they brought it back without completely ruining it (ie. BlackTop) and at a reasonable price, I'd be all over it.
