would this be possible? Then people with soundcloud accounts could post soundclips directly in the post, and it would save people a couple of clicks and a browser fan.
I don't believe so. In reading the tutorial you linked to, the admin mus have the option to "add bbc code" in order to create the embed. I looked at all my admin magic buttons, but that doesn't appear to be an option that I have.
I took a look at that, and the reason why newey is the Admin and I'm just the lowly programmer is that I could do that. Emphasis on "could".
When I accessed the blog portion of Soundcloud, I had no trouble. But when I went to soundcloud.com itself, I get errors out the ying-yang. In fact, it's so bad, that both my proxy server and my browser (IE9) throw up their hands in disgust, and simply won't let me access the site. The main problem is those "pesky" authentication certificates. In essence, soundcloud is using a bogus certificate, and that upsets my computer - a lot.
From experience, it doesn't pay to make an end-run around such warnings - they're put in place for a reason, such reason being user safety. With that in mind, I can't in good conscience embrace linking to a site that demonstrates such poor security skills as to have/use bogus certificates. Hence, for the safety of all of our members/viewers, I won't be implementing this feature. However, I ask, politely, that you continue to monitor them (if you feel brave enough), and when they get back to playing with a full deck, then do let me/us know. At that point I'd be only too happy to implement a useful feature like this.
Either that, or else search around for other sites of a similar nature - perhaps soundcloud isn't the only one out there with an interface that allows linkage from a Forum.
Thanks for the thoughts! ;D

I get full ssl lockage with no errors on FF and C. No JS errors or anything. Infact, there was a little message in the console: "you like to look under the hood, come work for us!". Pretty funny.
I remember every little thing...as if it happened only yesterday. I was barely seventeen, and I once killed a boy with a Fender guitar. I don't remember if it was a telecaster or a stratocaster, But I do remember that it had a heart of chrome and a voice like a horny angel.
Ah, but not everyone is convinced that IE is a bad thing.
More to the point, even before any browser is seen, my proxy server pulls the trigger on certificate alerts.
I can't say that everyone should take heed of this kind of warning, but the flip side is also true - I can't say that everyone should just ignore them, either. They're there for a reason, and it's up to the user to practice safe hex, or not.
Also, I now realize that I forgot to mention, above, that I updated my list of CA certs on Jan 2nd of this year. Perhaps it might be time to check again, just to make sure......

Based on your link it looks clean. If I had some known bad sites I'd like to see what returned, so I can't really do an objective test.
For reference, I've used SoundCloud everyday for years. It really is the only antidote I've found to modern radio. They had some capacity issues in the early days, some odd coding adventures and the typical weirdness seen when a site grows exponentially. I've never had a bad cert return.
I know what SG uses for his Internet security. He takes it very seriously...even the NSA is afraid of him... As he is the final word on what code flies around here I defer to his judgement on this.

Well, thanks for the vote of confidence.... I think.
As it happens, I'm up-to-date, CA certs-wise. Can't seem to find any other reason for the triggered alarms, and I spent more than an hour on it, last night.
But......
In deference to someone who's almost as Luddite as I am, I'll go out on a limb and implement the code, as advised in alley's opening post. I can always test on an older computer that I usually fire up only for tests like this, otherwise it's not hooked up to the network, so there's mightly little chance of malware making it over to the other machines that to need to remain on the network 24/7. (Often called a "honey pot", to attract potential intrusions because of its unprotected nature.)
c1, expect a PM in a moment, I wanna cross-check something with you, about Soundcloud.
Stay tuned.....

It came to my attention, rather forcefully, that my CA certs were not up-to-date. Refreshing those files from another location did part of the trick - I no longer get big errors, only little ones. I'll fix that nuisance crap sometime today or tonight, then get started implementing the embedding code.
Oh, and please, do breathe while standing by - no blue-faces allowed in the NutzHouse, 'cause TeleBlooz has a lock on that "feature". ;D

It turns out that ProBoards is planning to roll out a new version sometime in April. Probably the biggest upheaval of all will be a move from the current method of inserting code into headers (or footers) to "plug-ins" - a whole new way of introducing modifcations to one's Forum(s).
This means that the more complicated a board's added code, the bigger the headache will be when it comes time to convert everything to a plug-in. As we stand now, we have only one piece of code, that which re-sizes oversized images. If it's all the same to you, I'd really like to keep things this simple.... to my way of thinking, it's sad to work up this mod, test it, and release it to the members, only to have to start all over and do it again in 3 or 4 months time.
I hope that's OK with you all, thanks for thinking kindly of an old man.

I have been using soundcloud for a week. Sucks in uploading from FreeBSD (8.3) as well as Ubuntu 12.04 within VirtualBox. In the era of HTML5 those dudes are still using ... FLASH and calling it new version??? This is old, obsolete, deprecated and evil!
Sumgai, i am sure you possess very well everything you do, but if you are obsessed with security, you could give OpenBSD a chance or two. Admittedly it is one of the most secure OS's out there.
If i had more time myself i would deploy one or two OpenBSD for firewall/DMZ and one big FreeBSD for everything else, with some Ubuntu workstations inside.
I found that Linux Mint handled Flash about the best in my toying with different Linux distros. Granted, I don't have penguins on my wall, but SoundCloud ran flawlessly in VirtualBox on it.
And hey, Flash allows them to do all the cool flashy lights and pinwheel crap the Internet has become famous for. The days of execution and sense of purpose are over.

Flash used to be cool till some years ago. If you notice e.g. Google's apps in their suite (most of them, except youtube which was taken over later), they are all flash-free. Remember Google's Gibson LP anniversary home page ? www.google.com/logos/2011/lespaul.html Now place your mouse anywhere on that app and try to right-click. Do you see any of those typical flash options ? No! All was written in pure javascript! So flash whatsoever! Flash is or should be technically dead by now. My home linux'es all run flash fine, but with FreeBSD and Linux inside FreeBSD VirtualBox i struggle.... Anyway, just saw flickr.com's "Drag & drop photos and videos here". Pure javascript/HTML5. What i mean here : If an app looks like 2010-- overloaded with portlets, links, apps, bells and whistles, then flash is ok and lives in harmony with the rest. But if they adopt this minimalistic new look of 2010++ (led by google), a category which soundcloud clearly falls in, (at least aesthetically), then they ought be truly modern and drop flash sooner or later. HTML5 and all compliant browsers is supposed to cover all that and more.
See this video from mozilla : : flash-free... if video can be flash free, then there is no excuse for audio.

I agree with everything you say. I think the emphasis at SoundCloud...and most of their money...is going into capacity and bandwidth.
It's not uncommon for an organization to get trapped in a development scheme and just make esthetic changes versus a complete revision. With the traffic SoundCloud is now experiencing I can understand a certain amount of trepidation in doing a complete coding revision.
What they have works...maybe not to the current standard, but it does what the box says it does.

That is true. sooner or later i will have to face my own daemons : upgrade my FreeBSD workstation is like a battle against the devil and even worse bad luck, fate, doom, gloom and all the unpredictable things on earth. Compared to this, Linux is like a paradise of easiness and comfort , however i stick to my principles as a BSD warrior, somehow i think pain and agony and sleepless nights will pay back ;D ... some time

You BSD guys were all masochists anyway...I think half of you guys were into corporal mortification to begin with... Remember, eagles may soar, but weasels rarely get sucked into jet engines...
Yeah, you really need to take a look at LinuxMint. I liked it a lot better than Ubuntu. Stable, robust and very accepting of other peoples codes and devices. And 64Studio has already fought the good fight getting your audio devices to play nicely within the OS.
Time to put the mouse down and just walk away from the BSD...

We seem to have veered off into an area perhaps more suited to sg's new computer sub board. But since no one has posted in the suggestions box for years, I'm not going to actually do anything about it . . .Carry on!
Thanks for the tips, but in my doddering old age, I value boring routine over excitement, each and every time.
Lest you guys forget, let me remind you that when all this was new, I was the one sitting at a terminal, punching holes into paper tape for the readers to take in as instructions, and as data (on another tape) to be operated upon. No, Linus wasn't sitting next to me, looking over my shoulder and trying to learn how it's done.... but his father was!

It turns out that I block every cookie on the internet, and Soundcloud has a problem with that. After some careful and judicious investigating, I determined exactly which cookies were necessary, and which of the rest could stay out there in limbo.
The problem actually lay in the error report from Soundcloud. I dunno about anyone else, but a generic "Something went wrong, is your browser upto date?? is not what I call helpful in the least. Bad soundcloud, bad! No subscriber for you!!
But I've got the thing working on my computer, so when ProBoards rolls out Version 5 sometime in April, I should be able to write a plug-in that'll give all of us access to an embedded player. Emphasis on the "hopefully"......
