Help!! OK. I have a mint Copy of a Telecaster bass.It's made by Cameo.(Some ebayer says it is made in Holland. I say,Japan. Anyway...you won't believe this... The only pickup is at the neck position..and ..it is the same pickup as the Telecaster GUITAR has at the neck. It is a skinny,chrome "lipstick" type pickup in a nice plastic insert(that is removable) and all is under the chrome cover guard piece. I have turned my 120 watt Peavey amp(through my 1974 Sunn bottom)...all the way up on gains and treble ,etc. ..just to get a faint bass sound. (If I did that with my violin bass or dual pickup bass, I would be deaf for hours.) LOL OK. I checked all wires, Plug,pots, pickup,grounds. Everything is like new and connected. Question: How and where and what kind of pickup should I replace this thing with? I really don't want to do any cutting in the pickguard or plastic surround(it fits under the chrome cover guard perfectly.) It is a beautiful little bass and plays real sweet,but I hoped to put a chrome soapbar pickup in but everything I've seen will require cutting into plastics. Any ideas? Also , can I put louder pots in itinstead or won't it make any difference? Thanks!... Rory in Indiana

wow Rory,
that's a huge difference in volume between the instruments.
first step is to raise the pup so that it is as close to the strings as you can be without the strings touching as they vibrate.
no, wait maybe that should have been the second step. first step, make sure the strings are nickel or something magnetic!
third step - get a meter and measure the resistance between the tip and sleeve of a cord plugged into the bass. the volume on your bass should be full on.
give us that reading and we'll try to figure out if your pup is ok.
BTW - i see this is your 3rd post (the first 2 are just like this one). yeah, sometimes this posting thing can be a bit confusing at first, but you'll get the hang of it. log on and delete those other 2 posts just for good housekeeping. if your not sure about how to do it, have RandomHero help you with it.

;D OK, Thanks Dudes. The pickup is up as close as can be to the strings without buzz, they are metal bass strings, and I will get a ohm tester and check the resistance on the chord end opposite the bass when plugged into the bass. Also, ..I have a Low gain and Hi gain input on my Peavey amp head. When I plug into the Low gain ,I get the weak bass sound. When I plug into the Hi gain input..I get nothing at all..even at full gain and volume. Does that point to anything?? The inputs work fine on my other basses and assorted guitars. Thanks again. The low gain input will pick up your bass in spite of whatever is weakening the signal, and the high gain doesn't even see it.
