I just saw Ken mentioned in another thread, and I ran across this site earlier today while Googling around: www.ultimateguitargear.com/kens_column.htmKen makes some interesting comments on caps and pots and stuff, plus I now know not to use my soldering gun around pickups. (A good pencil-type iron is probably easier to maneuver, anyway.) So that was something I didn't have to learn the hard way. I hope his health situation is at least stable if not improved now. -- Doug C.

soldering guns are for impatient people who can't wait to do it right. put that thing in a drawer and forget that you have it. Actually, I got that rig more for the hot-knife attachment that came with it than for soldering electronic stuff. I have three Danelectro miniboards (cases) that I've strapped together with nylon webbing for easier schlepping around. The hot knife is just a heck of a lot neater for trimming the webbing to length and sealing the ends than are other methods. But you can bet I won't be getting impatient and firing up that 100 watt (and that's the low setting) monster for any work on my guitars. So while I've got your ear, what are your thoughts on mini- www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=60395 or micro-torches with a "flameless" pinpoint tip? Of course they call the larger of the two the micro- ( www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=82559), and the soldering tip for it looks kinda "glawmy" (that's a Maine word), but it also could work on heatshrink tubing. (I won't swipe La Wife's hair dryer for those jobs.)

i've used those types a couple of times before. great for heat-shrink. don't much care for them in general though. of course, never use one in an environment with flammable vapors.
if you're lucky you might still be able to get an ungar. they've stopped making them i think. they were bought out by weller. you know, the guys famous for those stupid guns.
i generally use a HOT cartridge (47watt) with a small chisel tip.
lots of heat quick. get on and off fast so the heat doesn't travel into the board (yeah i know righteous tube amps don't use PCBoards blah, blah, blah. but i work on other stuff too.).
whoever invented the iron clad tip gets an atta-boy fer-sherr.
and a damp sponge is handy to keep the tip clean.
