Dang, don't know how I missed that one. The interaction between his playing and Baker's drumming was what made Cream sound so different, never mind Clapton's virtuosity.

Guys he had a fabulous singing voice too. Eric would have loved to have his voice. He was classically trained too- in piano was it? many bass players seem to float between bass and piano. A lot of departures recently, but a giant this time.

Actually, it was a cello. He was gigging in a jazz band while attending school. The school frowned on their students playing jazz and gave him an ultimatum to quit the band. He decided to quit school instead and the rest of us will eternally applaud his decision.
He was a multi-instrumentalist that played with people from MacLaughlin, Moore, Gallagher, Holdsworth to Zappa. That, and he was the only guy that guy make an EB-3 sound like something more than just electric mud...
