DiMarzio claims to have designed this set to make a PAF form-factor equipped 335 sound like a Gretsch Country Gentlemen with Filter'trons.
This is the second PAF type set I've looked at that attempts to ape a Filter'tron, the first was the GFS Nashville. The EJ Custom appears to much more faithfully hit the right resonant frequency, putting the loaded peak in the mid 4kHz range, similar to a true Filter'tron. The inductance values of 2.3H and 1.8H are also consistent with Filter'tron design.
Another interesting choice DiMarzio appears to have made is to wind the coil with 43 or 44 AWG wire, not sure which, but it makes for extremely thin coils, as seen in the picture below. I think the coil would have still been pretty thin even with 42 AWG, which is what a Filter'tron consists of, so I'm not sure what motivated that design choice. The bobbins also contain DiMarzio's embedded slugs. At this point, I'm not sure that there is a DiMarzio PAF style humbucker that does not contain them.
DiMarzio offers the EJ Custom with or without a cover, though neither will correctly curve match the cover of a Filter'tron, because the "H" hole of a Filter'tron cover causes eddy losses that are not nearly as aggressive as a PAF cover, but not quite as low as having no cover at all. This finding of fact is thanks to Ken Willmott. I'm going to be analyzing a broad range of Filter'tron style pickups soon, so I will have more data points in the near future with which to compare.
My subjective feeling about the EJ Customs was that, with the cover, they hit the same highs as a Filter'tron, but not as full bodied sounding. I did not try them without a cover. My impression was that they were excessively underwound PAFs, and so I was a little disappointed by them. Removing the cover may have helped, or better yet, a cover with an "H" hole in the top.
