Typically, you would do that with switch that changes Position 1 or 5 to be the Neck & Bridge, but I wanted it in Position 3 so that it was more like using a Tele. I ended up with a number of variations on this theme of combining a Strat & a Tele. The Simple Strat-O-Tele with Push-Pull Switch - Strat Version On a Tele, Position 3 gives you the Neck & Middle pickups together, so I started by adding a push-pull (or push-push) pot and a 5-Way Super Switch to change Position 3 from being the Middle pickup by itself to being the Neck & Bridge pickups in parallel. I also used the extra switch contacts on the 5-way to disconnect the tone pots in Positions 2 & 4. Push-Pull Down (Normal Strat): 1. Bridge – Tone 2 2. Middle & Bridge – No Tone 3. Middle – Tone 2 4. Middle & Neck – No Tone 5. Neck – Tone 1 Push-Pull Up: 1. Bridge – Tone 2 2. Middle & Bridge – No Tone 3. Neck & Bridge – Tone 2 4. Middle & Neck – No Tone 5. Neck – Tone 1 The Simple Strat-O-Tele with Toggle Switch - Strat Version This setup has the same functionality as the one above, but uses a SPDT toggle switch instead of a push-pull (or push-push) switch. Switch Down (Normal Strat): 1. Bridge – Tone 2 2. Middle & Bridge – No Tone 3. Middle – Tone 2 4. Middle & Neck – No Tone 5. Neck – Tone 1 Switch Up: 1. Bridge – Tone 2 2. Middle & Bridge – No Tone 3. Neck & Bridge – Tone 2 4. Middle & Neck – No Tone 5. Neck – Tone 1 The Simple Strat-O-Tele with Push-Pull Switch - Tele Version Here's the Tele version of the Simple Strat-O-Tele. Since there is only one tone control, a "half" Super Switch can be used. Push-Pull Down: 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge 3. Neck & Bridge 4. Middle & Neck 5. Neck Push-Pull Up (Normal Strat): 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge 3. Middle 4. Middle & Neck 5. Neck The Simple Strat-O-Tele with S-1 - Tele Version Here's the Tele version of the Simple Strat-O-Tele with an S-1 Volume Pot. Since there is only one tone control, a "half" Super Switch can be used. S-1 Up: 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge 3. Neck & Bridge 4. Middle & Neck 5. Neck S-1 Down (Normal Strat): 1. Bridge 2. Neck & Bridge Tone 2 Push-Pull Up: 1. Bridge Inside Coil 3. Bridge Outside Coil 5-Way Switching: 1. Bridge Humbucker 2. Bridge Inside Coil & Middle 3. Middle 4. Neck & Middle 5. Neck Tone 1 Push-Pull Up: 3. Neck & Bridge Outside Coil 5-Way Switching: 1. Bridge Humbucker 2. Bridge Humbucker & Middle 3. Middle 4. Neck & Middle 5. Neck Toggle Switch Up: 3. Neck & Bridge Humbucker The Original Strat-O-Tele OK, so it's not really the Original Strat-O-Tele, but the Simple S-O-T didn't last long before I wanted the switch to change more than one position. So, this is what I'm calling the Original Strat-O-Tele. With the addition of 1 wire, Position 4 also changes to being all 3 pickups in parallel. It's the same 7 total choices as a 7-way Strat, but with the added 2 choices in different places than a "normal" 7-way Strat. Switch Down (Normal Strat): 1. Bridge – Tone 2 2. Middle & Bridge – No Tone 3. Middle – Tone 2 4. Middle & Neck – No Tone 5. Neck – Tone 1 Switch Up: 1. Bridge – Tone 2 2. Middle & Bridge – No Tone 3. Neck & Bridge – Tone 2 4. All 3 Pickups – No Tone 5. Neck – Tone 1 Strat-O-Tele SS for Tele I have a friend with a Nashville B-Bender Tele and I started talking with him about adding an S-1 switch to it so that he could have some more choices. The Nashville B-Bender has a 5-way pickup selector switch, but doesn't give you the Middle pickup by itself or the Neck & Bridge in series, so we started with those. I like the sound of the Middle & Bridge pickups in series better than the sound of the Neck & Middle pickups in series, so that was the other choice. It has 2 modes - one like a Tele and one like a Strat. Since it has a 5-way switch, the Tele mode has 2 added positions - the Neck & Bridge in series and the Middle & Bridge in series. The name comes from the idea that it's a Strat and a Tele with 2 Series positions - SS. Here's how it switches: S-1 Up (Tele Mode): 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge in Series 3. Neck & Bridge in Parallel 4. Neck & Bridge in Series 5. Neck S-1 Down (Strat Mode): 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge in Parallel 3. Middle 4. Neck & Middle in Parallel 5. Neck This is a video I made of the mod: Wiring the Strat-O-Tele SS Here's a video of Shawn demo'ing the Strat-O-Tele SS: Strat-O-Tele SS for Tele - 4PDT Toggle This is the same switching setup as above, but using a 4PDT On-On toggle switch instead of the Fender S-1 switch. Here's how it switches: Toggle Back (Tele Mode): 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge in Series 3. Neck & Bridge in Parallel 4. Neck & Bridge in Series 5. Neck Toggle Forward (Strat Mode): 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge in Parallel 3. Middle 4. Neck & Middle in Parallel 5. Neck Strat-O-Tele SS for Strat Here's the Strat version. It functions like a Strat with the S-1 up and like a Tele with the S-1 down. S-1 Up (Strat Mode): 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge in Parallel 3. Middle 4. Neck & Middle in Parallel 5. Neck S-1 Down (Tele Mode): 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge in Series 3. Neck & Bridge in Parallel 4. Neck & Bridge in Series 5. Neck Strat-O-Tele SS Mini Then, for those who want a simpler version, I came up with the Strat-O-Tele SS Mini. There are only 5 choices - The 3 standard Tele choices plus 2 in-series choices. It switches like this: 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge in Series 3. Neck & Bridge in Parallel 4. Neck & Bridge in Series 5. Neck Strat-O-Tele SS Mini for Strat And, here's the Strat version. It switches like this: 1. Bridge with Tone 2 2. Middle & Bridge in Series - No Tone Pot 3. Neck & Bridge in Parallel with Tone 2 4. Neck & Bridge in Series - No Tone Pot 5. Neck with tone 1 Strat-O-Tele Fat Tele This variant changes the Tele mode so that the 3 standard Tele choices are Positions 2, 3, & 4. Position 1 is the Middle & Bridge pickups in series (virtual bridge humbucker) and Position 5 is the Neck & Middle in series (virtual neck humbucker). I've shown it here with the S-1 switching pot, but this switching setup only needs a DPDT switch, so it could be done with a push-pull (or push-push) pot or a DPDT toggle, as well. It switches like this: S-1 Up (Strat Mode): 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge in Parallel 3. Middle 4. Neck & Middle in Parallel 5. Neck S-1 Down (Fat Tele Mode) 1. Middle & Bridge in Series 2. Bridge 3. Neck & Bridge in Parallel 4. Neck 5. Neck & Middle in Series Strat-O-Tele Fat Tele with Push-Pull Tone Here's the Strat-O-Tele Fat Tele with a Push-Pull Tone Control. This variant changes the Tele mode so that the 3 standard Tele choices are Positions 2, 3, & 4. Position 1 is the Middle & Bridge pickups in series (virtual bridge humbucker) and Position 5 is the Neck & Middle in series (virtual neck humbucker). Push-Pull Down (Normal Strat): 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge 3. Middle 4. Middle & Neck 5. Neck Push-Pull Up: 1. Middle & Bridge in Series 2. Bridge 3. Neck & Bridge in Parallel 4. Neck 5. Neck & Middle in Series Strat-O-Tele X with Modified TBX Tone Control This is a hybrid of my Strat-X2 switching system and a simple Strat-O-Tele. I really like the Strat-X2 setup, but I still want the Tele middle position sound (Neck & Bridge in parallel). I made some versions of the Strat-X2+ with the Neck & Bridge option, but they always end up being in Position 1 or 5. I prefer to have the Tele middle position sound in the, well, middle position. So, using the Schaller Dual Megaswitch M pickup selector switch (I emailed Gunter Eyb to get some), I finally had enough switch contacts to do this the way I always wanted it. It's a lot of wiring, but I love it. It's easy to use & has 11 unique sounds - all of which are usable. This second version of the Strat-X gives you 5 fatter sounds when you press the S-1 switch and a Fender TBX tone control pot that is wired for treble cut one way and bass cut the other (useful to brighten up the series combinations). With the S-1 switch up, the 5 pickup selection choices are standard Strat switching. Press the S-1 switch down and you get 3 in-series choices plus 2 series/parallel combinations that are similar to the standard Strat positions 2 & 4, but louder so they match the output of the series combinations. Flipping the toggle switch with the S-1 in the up position changes Position 3 to be the Neck & Bridge pickups in parallel (Tele middle position sound). The toggle switch has no affect when the S-1 is in the down position. S-1 Up (Normal Strat): 1. Bridge 2. Middle & Bridge (Parallel) 3. Middle 4. Middle & Neck (Parallel) 5. Neck Toggle Switch forward with S-1 Up: Position 3 changes to Neck & Bridge in Parallel (Tele Middle Position) S-1 Down: 1. Middle & Bridge in Series 2. Middle & Bridge in Parallel with the Neck in Series 3. Neck & Bridge in Series 4. Middle & Neck in Parallel with the Bridge in Series 5. Neck & Middle in Series Toggle Switch has no affect when S-1 is down. Strat-O-Tele X2 with Modified TBX Tone Control Version 2 After some time with Strat-O-Tele X, I started thinking about trading out the 2 pickups in parallel with the 3rd in series positions for the Half Out-of-Phase choices that I like so much on a Strat. The Fender TBX tone control pot is wired for treble cut one way and bass cut the other (useful to brighten up the series combinations). With the S-1 switch up, the 5 pickup selection choices are standard Strat switching. Press the S-1 switch down and you get 3 in-series choices plus 2 Half Out-of-Phase combinations that are more humbucker sounding (to me) than the pickups in series. Middle & Bridge Half Out-of-Phase 3. Neck & Bridge in Series 4. Middle & Neck Half Out-of-Phase 5. Neck & Middle in Series Toggle Switch has no affect when S-1 is down. Strat-O-Tele X2a with Modified TBX Tone Control Version 2a After some time with version 2 of the Strat-O-Tele X, I decided that I wanted to swap positions 1 & 2 and 4 & 5 with the S-1 down. Middle & Bridge Half Out-of-Phase 2. Middle & Bridge in Series 3. Neck & Bridge in Series 4. Middle & Neck in Series 5. Neck & Middle Half Out-of-Phase Toggle Switch has no affect when S-1 is down. |
