I liked the simplicity of that setup, but wondered if I could add a switch to have the option of blending the pickups in series, too. The name comes from it being a series & parallel blender - a Splender. In order to switch the blender from parallel blending to series blending, I needed to switch 2 wires, so this can be done with a DPDT toggle switch or push-pull pot. Tele Splender with Toggle Switch Tele Splender with S-1 Volume I like the Fender S-1 switching pot, so I made a version using that instead of the toggle switch. Tele Splender with S-1 Volume and Phase Switch Now that there's a space between the volume & tones pots again, the obvious next change is to add an out-of-phase option, right? That's what I thought, too. I don't really care for straight out-of-phase wiring with pickups in parallel, but I really like Half Out-of Phase (HOoP) in that wiring scheme. But, HOoP doesn't really work well with pickups in series (too thin sounding). Fortunately, there's a switch available on the S-1, so I can do both! When the S-1 is set for pickups blending in parallel, the Out-of-Phase switch gives you Half Out-of-Phase. When the S-1 is set for pickups blending in series, the OoP switch gives you straight Out-of-Phase. Perfect! Tele 3-Way Spender For those who are more traditional, I wanted to have a version that would have the pickup blending only in the middle position, retaining the standard Bridge pickup only in Position 1 and Neck pickup only in Position 3. It requires a 3-Way Super Switch and the Fender S-1 switching pot. A push-pull tone pot could be used to add the Out-of-Phase option to this. Strat 3-Way Splender Then, I wondered if this Splender idea would work on a 3 pickup guitar. I came up with a setup that uses the 3-Way Super Switch to get 3 different pickup blending options. I installed it on a Strat just to confirm that it worked & liked it so much that I kept in (and started modifying it, of course). 3-Way Switching With Blend Pot: 1. Middle & Bridge 2. Neck & Bridge 3. Neck & Middle S-1 Up: Pickups Blend in Parallel S-1 Down: Pickups Blend in Series Strat 3-Way Splender Using Push-Pull Pot Same as above, but with a push-pull pot instead of the Fender S-1. 3-Way Switching With Blend Pot: 1. Middle & Bridge 2. Neck & Bridge 3. Neck & Middle Push-Pull Down: Pickups Blend in Parallel Push-Pull Up: Pickups Blend in Series Strat 3-Way Splender with Phase Switch on Rear Pickup This version adds a phase reversal switch (mini toggle) that will give you the 2 pickups Out-of-Phase when combined in the blender. The phase reversal switch is wired to reverse the phase of the pickup that is closer to the bridge. 3-Way Switching With Blend Pot: 1. Middle & Bridge 2. Neck & Bridge 3. Neck & Middle S-1 Up: Pickups Blend in Parallel S-1 Down: Pickups Blend in Series Toggle Switch Down: Pickups Blend In Phase Toggle Switch Up: Pickups Blend Out-of-Phase Strat 3-Way Splender with Phase Switch on Front Pickup This version adds a phase reversal switch (mini toggle) that will give you the 2 pickups in the blender Half Out-of-Phase when the blender is in parallel mode and will give you straight Out-of-Phase when the blender is in series mode. The phase reversal switch is wired to reverse the phase of the pickup that is closer to the neck. I prefer this for the HOoP option, since it thins out the pickup that is the fatter sounding of the two that are in the blender. 3-Way Switching With Blend Pot: 1. Middle & Bridge 2. Neck & Bridge 3. Neck & Middle S-1 Up: Pickups Blend in Parallel S-1 Down: Pickups Blend in Series Toggle Switch Down: Pickups Blend In Phase Toggle Switch Up: Pickups Blend Out-of-Phase Strat 3-Way Splender Using Push-Pull Pot with Out-of-Phase Option This is the version that uses a push-pull pot instead of the Fender S-1, but adds a simple Out-of-Phase phase switch that reverses the phase of the pickup in the blender that is closer to the neck. 3-Way Switching With Blend Pot: 1. Middle & Bridge 2. Neck & Bridge 3. Neck & Middle Push-Pull Down: Pickups Blend in Parallel Push-Pull Up: Pickups Blend in Series Toggle Switch Down: Pickups Blend In Phase Toggle Switch Up: Pickups Blend Out-of-Phase |
