man the old times were nuts! they actually sold amps that plugged straight into the wall with no power transformer. so with a two prong plug you have a 50% chance of the mains voltage connected directly to the chassis ground, which is connected to the input jack sleeve, the guitar's bridge, the strings, and YOU obviously I'm not going to make something that dangerous but i found a use for a 50-0-50 transformer pulled from a solid state organ! using a solid state bridge rectifier instead of the 35w4 half wave rectifier (will need to do some figuring wrt voltage dropping resistor for the series heaters since they'll be run off the B+). i have a 50L6 output tube on the way. using some oddball tubes for preamp: 6sj7 and 6ba6. signal will go into the input jack, split in parallel into both tubes, and then will be blended with a 500kMN pot before volume and then output tube and single ended transformer. gonna use two 8" speakers. the chassis was one of the vibrato units from a Hammond tube organ. other side and the control panel top have had waterslide decals and poly sprayed on them so they're drying. power transformer will be screwed to the cabinet instead of the chassis because while but huge i don't trust the thin sheet metal

now that i think about it I'm glad i ordered the 35w4 rectifier. i think i need to use it for the heater string just to avoid a mondo power dropping resistor (calculated at 44w so 100w would be the safe bet lol)

Ah, the classic All-American Five tube set. Your mods just might make a nice addition to the lore, who knows. Have you thought to look up this refuses-to-die bit of history via your favorite Bingle?

I've done a considerable amount of research, including the part of rob robinette's wonderful site where he talks about how to make one safe. what a time we live in that I've been able to review a ton of schematics (silvertone, Gibson, supro/valco/national) from the 40s/50s for inspiration

board is done just gotta wire it all up 25L6 6SJ7 6BA6 all 300mA heaters so I'll run them in a series string off the 38v tap on the power transformer (25 + 6 + 6 = 37v so pretty much perfect) brand new electro caps but everything else has been salvaged from equipment I've dismantled

got the offboard stuff and transformers left to wire. I'm thinking 8" dimensional pine for the cabinet

haven't had a chance to test it because the power transformer won't be connected until it's in the cabinet so I've started on the cabinet
