I've toyed with making a 4x8 (there should be a post somewhere around here) before. 8" speakers get a bad rep from cheap practice amps but can sound very good and not be bass deficient (there are at least one or two companies that make serious bass cabs using 8"speakers) the real issue comes because guitarists tend to be narrow-minded/misinformed when it comes to this kinda stuff so the conclusion i reached was it probably would be difficult to sell

You have been in my thoughts too in the back of mind from the things I’ve read about your work with amps and other things. Wish I had your skills ! I have a fender mustang modelling amp with a 1x8 speaker and I think it sounds great . I think it’s a great bedroom amp size and it’s still loud. I had read something like 8 inch speakers are less efficient? What does that mean? That they are just quiter and need to be driven harder ? If so wouldn’t that be a good thing for getting more cranked tone at home You should definitely consider building a 4x8 valve amp There is also the Gibson maestro ga45 which is a 4x8. Used a lot by harp players

Roughly 33 square inches. Compare that to a 10" which is almost double that at 59 square inches. 85 square inches for a 12" and 138 square inches for a 15". Yes, you can put an 8" speaker in a properly tuned ported or ducted enclosure and get some decent bottom end. But you still require some serious cone excursions to produce the same spl as a larger speaker. Also the free-air resonance of a smaller speaker of the same design is inherently higher. This means putting 8s in an open-back cabinet tends to sound 'squawky'. and that's pretty much how I'd describe the sound of the amp in ourclarioncall's first video. JMO
