Unreg, For bare spots on wires, like plastic wiring, I use a small paintbrush or qtip and some Plastic Dip. You can get it at a hardware store and at most Walmart’s. It’s rubber. I’ve also used rubber cement. If the areas are small, clear acrylic nail polish would be just fine. But only after you’re finished with adjusting the wires. Nail polish is rigid once it sets. So, I’ve acquired Sally Hansen’s “big shiny top coat”. But, I don’t have any knowledge about nail polish, so frets, would a “top coat” work just as well as nail polish? Sorry, I don’t want to make a mistake using the wrong product to cover the many small bare parts of wires in my guitar. Oooh, “big shiny top coat” will work just fine on acrylic nails, at least that’s what a Clairol (sp?) representative wrote. And it’s clear. But, it’s a covering over nail polish type product, or so it seems.

Unreg, The Big Shiny Top Coat is fine. Any acrylic nail polish will do. But I want to be “clear” (ha!) to anybody else that using acrylic nail polish to shield bare components in a guitar wiring should be used very sparingly and on tiny spots. If someone has a big stripped wired or burnt wire cover, best to tape that or use some plastic dip or rubber cement; or, better yet, replace the wire. The polish sets rigid and can crack and flake off on big areas.
Just had to put that disclaimer on it Unreg.
After you’re done with your bare spots, give your fingernails a lovingly splash with that Big Shiny Top Coat! 🙌. See how better you can play with your flashing nails skittering down the fretboard!

You laugh, but back in my teens my guitar teacher was trying to teach me fingerpicking. He told me to grow the nails of my right hand for 3-4 weeks, shape them with an emery board, and apply clear nail polish to harden them. This was (allegedly) going to help my fingerpicking. I grew out my nails as instructed, after 3 weeks I couldn't stand it and trimmed them back, never did shape or polish them, told my guitar teacher to forget it, wasn't happening as far as I was concerned. End of story, other than to add that I still can't fingerpick worth a darn, although I'm sure that inability has nothing to do with my nails. Wife (to Husband): "Your hands are a mess! Don't you ever file your nails?" Husband (to wife): "No, I usually just throw them away." (insert rimshot sound effect here )

You laugh, but back in my teens my guitar teacher was trying to teach me fingerpicking.... Thank you newey. Sorry frets, I didn’t realize you were being serious. Long fingernails are really in the way for me while fingerpicking; a nail may accidentally hit an adjacent string so that’s one reason to keep them trimmed. I do think it would be awkward to fingerpick using only my nails; despite having been encouraged the same sort of thing, newey, in a guitar video. I forgot about that-video’s fingernail instruction. Finger picking seems to be more controllable for me bc it’s extremely difficult for me to move a pick around the strings for an entire song without accidentally hitting a wrong string. Have better control with my finger tips. My guitar skill level is way below all of yours. 😔

Y’all can laugh if you want. Some of us are secure enough to ignore antiquated notions of gender propriety. This is my fretting band, and yes they could stand a trim. I honestly haven’t been playing much lately. Sometimes, though, like if I’m practicing for a show, I’ll let my nails grow out leading up to it so that things get harder and harder to play cleanly. Then I clip them the day of and it’s sooo much easier. It’s kind of like jogging with ankle weights to train for a race. Or something. IDK, I don’t do sports.

Looking good Ash!!
I know exactly what you speak of pertaining to the nail cut.
Guys, keep your nails strong with a daily supplement of Biotin. It really works.
