Hi all. What is the logic behind these yellow stars above my posts? Notes: 1.) My question only cares about star color; has nothing to do with quantity. 2.) Stars start out red, and then somehow change to other colors such as blue, green, and at least black. 3.) I’m on yellow; it’s somewhat backwards bc yellow is my least appreciated of blue, red, green, and yellow. But, if yellow means something good then I’m very pleased with yellow stars. 4.) ChrisK has reached purple. Is purple the next shade after yellow? That’s the only one I’ve found that unreg hasn’t reached. If my stars ever become purple, I will DEFINITELY feel uncomfortably out-of-place..

1.) My question only cares about star color; has nothing to do with quantity Ahhh, but the two are related. Based on a member's post count, the colors of the stars change and their number increases. Someone who posts betwen 0 and 24 times starts out with one red star, with post #25 the member gets a second star and the stars are blue. At different increments of post counts, the stars increase in number and the colors change. The highest level is 4000 posts, which gets 11 stars, green in color. The stars are also tied to the member categories- one red star is a "rookie solder flinger", etc. There are only 4 colors- red, yellow, blue, and green, and the colors rotate, so there are multiple rankings that get the yellow, for example. So, even after you lose the yellow, you'll get back to it eventually, if you keep posting. There are also a few separate categories for staff members, with different numbers of stars and colors. My stars, as you see, are orange. ChrisK's purple stars are just for him, and we gave him a whole hootload of 'em.

Really cool to know; thank you newey! 👍😀 (And you have orange stars? Wow! 😀 In my low opinion, you all should add a bit more yellow to those stars bc I’ve always misinterpreted them as being red. ChrisK’s purple stars are amazing and I’m so glad it’s impossible to reach his level! 😁)

Just realized that Yogi B has white or silver stars. 🕯👍 And maybe my stars appeared black at one brief moment in time bc of my poor internet connection that day. Does everyone start with uncolored stars, and then the server colors the stars appropriately? Just a guess. (Don’t need an answer.) (or maybe, all star colors are set in stone when a user visits the website. However, after the user logs in, his/her stars start black and are then colored appropriately; this may happen during each page load. So, after a user posts, his/her star-color may be updated instantaneously. That makes sense to me... 🙂)

If you're seeing black stars, it must be a loading issue, as you said. We don't use black stars for member rankings. The staff can alter and/or add ranking categories, and we have done so on a couple of occasions over the years. The latest ranking scheme has been around for 4 or 5 yeras now. I don't thinks we've ever posted this before, but it isn't any big secret- I don't think any of us ever thought anyone would be interested enough to ask about it. But here's the rankings for the general membership: This is only for the general membership. As you note, staff members get their own designations, as "Administrator", "Moderator" or "Global Moderator". And some staff get their own custom titles (and stars) becase of special help they have provided or prowess they bring to the table. So, because he has helped with coding for the forums, Yogi B gets the title of "Code Wizard", Tragic Hero is an "Organ Transplant Specialist" because he recycles parts from old organs, etc. PS- In case you (or anyone else) is tempted to post a bunch of drivel just to run up the post count or change the colors of the corresponding stars, I will be fairly ruthless pruning any such postings.

Wait so we (mods and admins) get screwed out of stars?!? According to post count and the chart above, newey should have 11, and I should have 10. Not that it much matters to me, though I’ve always wondered why they handed me the mod keys to begin with...

I’ve always wondered why they handed me the mod keys to begin with... Well, the blood on the strings helped your rating . . . Funny, I never really understood what "shredder" meant until you changed your avatar to its current version. That must have been a show to remember!

Something around ten years ago, I got so excited strumming chords on a flok guitar at new year's eve that I split a good amount of blood inside the sound hole.
This could have been funny had the guitar been mine, but unfortunatly, it was a nice Seagull I had borrowed to a friend of my wife's parent (someone I barely knew) for the evening. I felt quite embarrrased explaining the incident and never borrowed a guitar again...

Wait so we (mods and admins) get screwed out of stars?!? According to post count and the chart above, newey should have 11, and I should have 10. As staff members, our stars are set based upon the group, not post counts as with other members. Which, I guess, sort of makes sense, since some of our posts are administrative in nature, not really related to any particular topic, just for housekeeping purposes. But, to make it more equitable, I just bumped up the star count for admins and moderators.

LOL. I was totally just messing around, but ok. So many of my posts are full of dead links and broken pictures, I’m not sure I really deserve all those stars.

Now it makes so much more sense, to me, before ashcatlt replied here, I was flabbergasted that my star amount was super close to every forum leader’s. (It’s now super apparent that I’m new and that pleases me greatly! )

Can I have an extra star for being a girl?💘 Well, I'd have to make up a "Girl Group", and make you a member. Seems a tad sexist to me . . .

But, to make it more equitable, I just bumped up the star count for admins and moderators. Equitable, schmequitable. I think 5 stars is plenty so I changed my group stars back to five.

hmmm... now, while accessing from non-mobile, I notice "Girl Tech" under her "Master Diagnostician"... but on mobile, it only says "Master Diagnostician"... so I wasn't aware you applied a Custom Title.

Haha! I was so wrong... I've only had black stars once; now I'm immune?
Just noticed JohnH having black stars... wanted to post my discovery to prove they actually exist.

I can see them just fine, gumboAnd they're the first stars I've seen (not on mobile) for a while, as everyone's equal under the rule of: .mini-profile img[alt="*"] { display: none; } More than six gui STARS? ..it's only an addiction if you're trying to quit...

And they're the first stars I've seen (not on mobile) for a while, as everyone's equal under the rule of: .mini-profile img[alt="*"] { display: none; } That's a concise and efficient use of an attribute selector in your rule. I'm not aware of any theme that has that rule. Did you somehow place it in your browser or something?

That's a concise and efficient use of an attribute selector in your rule. I'm not aware of any theme that has that rule. Did you somehow place it in your browser or something? You're right, it's not in a theme. It's part of a ( stylus) user-theme which I wrote to cut some of the vertical height from the mini-profile. That only makes a difference on short posts, but it can add up: at the time of writing without the style enabled the combined height all the posts on the first page of this thread (i.e. the <table class="list" /> element) is 11607px, whereas with it's only 8697px -- a saving of almost exactly one third. In terms of the total page height it may not be that important, but there's a significant difference between fitting only 2 (short) posts vertically on my screen vs being able to fit 3. Since I've left both the post count & custom member titles visible, the stars were among the things I deemed to be unnecessary.
