Bam:
ssshh .. I simply don't want people starting flames here .(and these words of mine should also have been told to Runewalker too, back then). GN has always been a guitarists' community, NOT a "Strat-fans-only" or "LP-fans-only" community.
it's not just about being kind when judging other peoples equipment, but to admit that everyone differs from each other, and we should appreciate whatever he/she chooses. to put it simple, I really like that analogue from the car world. I likes sedans, he likes SUVs. Should I say that his SUV is lacking what a car should have ? Definitely not.
There WAS an user in GN2 who left this place, saying that "seems like this forum is actually a LP players forum". I (we, presumably) don't want such thing to happen again - it's just a coincidence that most of the frequent posters here are LP fans.
again, it's all about personal tastes and opinions ..
Just saw this and struggled over whether to respond.
But since it is in the coffee shop and assumedly there is a little looseness in a caffiene fueled scatalogical discusssion, I'll drift a bit off thread topic, as this one already has ......
Your role is an important one and greatly appreciated. You observations about civility and tolerance are guidance not only here, but in life.
So I appreciate your concern that a transient visitor took his toys and left. This happens all the time and we don't know even knoe the silent lurkers who visit and leave. Now and again, a fossilized footprint appears as they come out of hiding and they leave with an exit diatribe.
But those us who spend time here are no doubt struck with the depths and complexity of the minds that participate here. Complex enough that members are not necessarily monolithic in their thoughts, mindscapes or predilections. Brief visitors will come to the conclusions they come to from the impressions garnered in a glimpse, and miss the subtleties and breadth of the personalities here. Stong even strident personalities? You bet. Most brief visitors will miss the underlying quality of thought that comes out in following the discussions in the threads and the underlying respect that regulars enjoy with each other.
The brief visitor that came here then left with the conclusion that it is an LP forum either took too small a sample of readings or simply arrived at an improbable conclusion. I’ve spent probably too much time here so I at least have a larger sample. I don’t detect an LP bias here at all. If anything there is probably more discussion about 3 pup designs, and certainly some on-and-on about 5-way switches, which are completely alien to LPs.
So if anything I said ever gave you the impression I was all LP or all Strat or all Rick or all Teisco or ..... then the best I can think is that a single comment is not seen in context of all the observations. Yes I have the LP, and about 7-10 strat or strat styles in various stages of design and completion.
I am probably guilty though of challenging comfortable assumptions ---- because it’s a little fun, and getting out of our comfort zones can yield new insights and learnings. One of the great gifts of these forums, designs, discussions, explorations and ‘experiments’ is the way the journeys and discoveries challenge our presumptions.
Think of all those Strat owners that for years that ‘knew’ there were only 3 pup sounds, then ‘knew’ there were only 3 pups and 2 combos, and that was it. Imagine the “ah-ha” at the first Strat mod that adds a system series switch taking that Strat to places the guitarist never imagined it would go. I still get a little disoriented cranking up a modded strat pummeling gear crunch powerchords as nasty as any Gibby I have ever had.
The reality of mods is that LPs and Gibbies are not very accommodating to mods, and I would venture to guess that once you move into more than 1 mod, you start really appreciating Leo's vision of component-based building.
All of our love affairs with guitars have been excursions into myths and beliefs, and early on I, like many of us, came to definitive conclusions about what elements make "the" sound ..... and have had to swallow crow repeatedly as I busted my own myths.
I don't really see biases here about HH vs. SSS, Fender vs. Gibby, etc. You certainly see passionately held opinions, but heck, most of us are guitarists, and somewhere in there lurks the heart and emotions and irrationalities of an artist's constitution. So you expect passionate opinions, frequently irrespective of reality.
So yes we should always be respectful, but not all humans play by the rules. We can't really control misbehavior, …. but we can control our reactions to provocation.
Folks are going to be obnoxious, folks are going to periodically go over the top, and folks are going to react and get their panties in a wad. It’s just that the panty-wad folks feel wronged and righteously indignant --- But essentially affect the same dimensions of agitation as the provocateurs.
Have you ever met an angry person that was wrong, yet? That’s one of the great things about anger, indignation, umbrage ---- all of that --- you take the position of being wronged and thus morally correct in smiting your enemy. So the dude that was miffed about LP lover’s here wadded up the Calvins and stormed out. He did not do adequate research and jumped to erroneous conclusions. Oh, well.
Tolerance and respect are good things. Peace, love and understanding are good things too. Not taking ourselves so seriously has merit as well.
