Enjoy! Or not. I suspect that ashcatlt will appreciate this, even if no one else does. Ash, just listened to a little of your latest upload at YT. Interesting! It is late here now - I will give it a proper, full listening tomorrow.

Oh yeah that was fun, thanks!
And thanks for listening to my mess. That one was written for a birthday basement show that we couldn’t play. Name all the songs I referenced and you might win...something... The Pat Benetar one doesn’t count though because I didn’t know that was a thing until after.

Love the canned applause, 'cause there ain't no way that anybody who doesn't need a wrangler could actually appreciate that.... that..... I can't give a proper description on a family-friendly website. Suffice it to say that Frank Zappa would call these guys his Poster Boys for his famous quote: A composer is a guy who goes around forcing his will on unsuspecting air molecules, often with the assistance of unsuspecting musicians. Holy Jeebus, even ash has a better sense of how to not offend the ear.

Well, you might be the only one here who found that 'fun'. I did find it kind of interesting that a composer who usually makes use of classical instrumentation would use four electric guitars like that. Though,I don't think the results were very effective. But it is interesting what we can come across when we disappear down a YT rabbit hole. Listening to your music, I was reminded of the Air - Alessandro Baricco collaboration, City Reading: And - I think it was - from there* that I stumbled upon this piece of musique concrète: * Actually, I think there was an intermediate step which prompted me to look up musique concrète at YT. But I have no idea what that it was now. There is lot I dislike about YT, but I have to say, it is fantastic for discovering stuff we would never come across in a score of lifetimes before the age of the Internet.

The 'whooping' at the end amused me. * That's a surprisingly crap-looking website.

Ash's song is better, if you ever do an ST cover please let me know, they were one of my favorite bands (along side 20 others!).
This specific quartet title is misleading ... I expected some neo-classic virtuozos and instead I see this incoherent sounding piece ...

Generous. To paraphrase Joseph Conrad, that “...was not making music; it was simply murdering silence with a vulgar, ferocious energy.” HTC1

Oh come on guys. It really was pretty cool. The kind of angular melodies, unusual harmonic motion, and off-kilter rhythms that I find very interesting. Parts of it felt kind of like Beefheart, some of it almost reminds me of Television, but really it’s fairly tame for contemporary experimental classical stuff. I’m not sure what pyrroz was saying, but I think they asked me to cover Suicidal Tendencies( ?). That’s not likely to happen any time soon, but this is kind of relevant: “Just 'cause you don't understand what's going on Don't mean it don't make no sense And just 'cause you don't like it, don't mean it ain't no good”

I can see where those sentences would be tough to parse for non-native speakers. Those of us who are fluent and at least passing familiar with colloquial speech know what he meant without trouble.

Weren't the Rolling Stones singing "I can'T get NO satisfaction" btw Well, the double negative there may be appropriate. I suspect that back in 1966 Mick, Keith et. al. were getting all the satisfaction they could handle . . .

OK, you would like to know the basis of my previous post, without the aid of quotations, most likely from deceased observers, I will be attempt to oblige.
Music is always a view into the culture and sometimes the individual who created it. It either speaks to a financial or higher calling, at its best. Cases in point would be Albinoni, Mozart, Grieg, Davis, Evans or even Prince...you get the point. At it's worse it is a molestation of ear drums and air molecules. Yoko makes this point succinctly.
Even if it isn't virtuoso level, if it moves, inspires or transcends, it touches the essence of what music is all about. Even if it just engages your body to want to dance, it reaches that primal part of humans that that music speaks to.
When it only makes you want to move your feet out of the room or your mouse to the STOP button, then it falls into the latter category, IMHO.
As far as Suicidal Tendencies are concerned, I used to play them back in the early 90's when I worked at the radio station. They were a different band with Robert Trujillo...
To make the point, let me share this side project with Mike Muir and Robert Trujillo:
Find any Infectious Grooves song without Trujillo and the intensity and drive falls away. Oh yeah, you might also recognize the guy signing the chorus in this video, too...
My point is this. The musician does not establish the viability or validity of his work...the audience and time does.
Happy Trails

I can see where those sentences would be tough to parse for non-native speakers. Those of us who are fluent and at least passing familiar with colloquial speech know what he meant without trouble. Believe it or don’t, I just now realized the irony here. It’s literally just paraphrasing “Just cause you don’t understand...” So then cynical1 brings up Yoko, and that’s...well it’s an argument I’ve had a couple times recently what with that new doc series going on. Her influences draw largely from a foreign tradition, and while she definitely leans way experimental, much of it is actually quite intelligible from the perspective of her cultural roots. Most of the hate she gets really is just racism and misogyny. I personally would rather listen to her than her husband, and so would most of my friends. I posted this in reply to somebody’s fb post not long ago. People laughed at me, but then the OP came back with this article from the NYT, none of which is really news to me: www.nytimes.com/2021/12/08/arts/music/yoko-ono-beatles-get-back.htmlFor my part, I never really claimed to make music. Plenty of people have told me that what I do is not, so fine, it’s not. Not going to stop me from doing it.

ashcatlt- Your link to the NYT article just hits their paywall for nonsubscribers. cynical1 nails it. At the "time", audiences were scratching their collective heads at Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Scott Joplin- the list could get pretty long. Years later, they're all "great". And Yoko was a performance artist before "performance art" was even a genre. In his autobiography, Stravinsky wrote: "At the beginning of my career as a composer I was a good deal spoiled by the public. Even such things as were at first received with hostility were soon afterwards acclaimed. But I have a very distinct feeling that in the course of the last fifteen years my written work has estranged me from the great mass of my listeners...They cannot and will not follow me in the progress of my musical thought. What moves and delights me leaves them indifferent, and what still continues to interest them holds no further attraction to me...I believe that there was seldom any real communion of spirit between us." Same thing we're talking about here.

cynical1 I am stunned you like ST and Infectious Grooves! You were playing on the radio!! WOW!! "hey man look at me now, I am on the radiooooo".. hehe I am sure you know this one as well (from SOAD)! IG were huge. Their first two albums were fabulous ! There were other side bands as well "Show No Mercy" being one of them, their song "Controlled by Hatred" (one of my favorites, I cried when I listened the ST version) was made famous by ST. About Trujilo and ST, this was a phenomenal lineup, it is sad Trujilo pretends like Metallica is his home, when he knows that what he plays in Metallica will never ever reach the heights of his performance in Suicidal Tendencies or Infectious Grooves. Speaking of IG, I didn't like Mas Boraccho , this was with Trujilo included, however, I dont think they released anything without Trujilo.
All those bands (crossover, proto-funk-metal, funk-hardcore, thash-funk) , both from California and NY went downhill after 1995 or so, their era ended.

cynical1 I am stunned you like ST and Infectious Grooves! ... Stunned? Any band with a good bass player... Trujillo is an interesting character. He helped return the Bass of Doom to the Pastorius family. He also produced Jaco: The Film. What's not to like about this guy? The move to Metallica was good at the time. Art for art's sake, but money for God's Sake... I think he's ready to make a change. Check some of the YouTube live stuff for the IG without Trujillo. Trujillo is missing in more than the flesh... And sorry, but I was never much of a System of a Down. Once the muppet voice comes out I'm hitting the skip button... HTC1

The whole band was unreal, seeing those latin/hispanic dudes, the singer and leader a guy with long blond hair, playing the best punk in years, fast pace, nice catchy melodies, emotion to the full, and a black guitarist (Rocky George) who IMHO gave the name to the Ibanez RG series (Ibanez does not confirm). A punk group with fantastic melodies and in addition with a virtuoso black guitarist??? GIMME A BREAK!! those guys were awesome! That was an era that barriers fell, no more strictly metal/punk/thrash, it was crossover a blending , a marriage of many genres where anyone was invited, none was excluded. Those were the times!
About SOAD, those guys come from our side of the globe, Armenians are like home in Greece, same faces, same religion, all except the language. IMHO after 2000 they were the best thing that happened to rock n roll, I tried to listen to some Tool, never made it, I can listen to all the 5 albums in a row. IMHO SOAD were what Anthrax used to be in the 80s.
Try to listen to ATWA or Forrest .... many thrash bands used oriental scales... those guys did it in the most original form..
