Yesterday I finally got into the guts of my electric and changed something. It took longer than I expected and doesn't look great, but it works (and it's temporary)!
The guitar had been changed (it seems) to 50's wiring when I had something else fixed in it years ago, but after learning about that here, I wanted to undo that. I salvaged a little piece of wire from an old telephone cable (best I could come up with without going shopping) and reconnected the volume pot directly to the jack, then reconnected the tone pot to the volume pot, of course.
The biggest challenge was needing to hold at least three things at once — definitely need a "helping hands" stand or something.
I'm super-excited because I've been intimidated by soldering for so long, and I wanted to share it with you all because I might not have tried if I hadn't ended up here! Thanks for all the advice so far ... I'm sure I'll have more questions soon.

I'm assuming it worked? If so, congrats on dipping your toes in the waters . . .
