Here's some links to the best mp3 settings and programs. wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=EAC_and_Lamewww.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=28124That hydrogenaudio is your best source of mp3 info. Basically, your 'best' settings are going to be VBR, averaging 192kbs or so, in joint stereo. Can you hear the difference between your wav and your mp3? You shouldnt be able to, and if you can, it's because either, A. you havent converted at the 'best' possible settings or B. actually, you cant ;D and you can test your hearing/encoding with this: ff123.net/abchr/abchr.html Its a blind listening test. I bet my buddy $100 he couldnt tell the difference. After a couple AB trials, he wouldnt take the bet ;D

I'll likely switch to Audacity, since everyone seems to like that OK. Nope, not me, no sir. here's why, pasted from a rant to a friend of mine: It doesn't support vst, in fact it doesn't support realtime fx. So, 1. if you're using the built in comps and limiters, they cant be high quality as the vsts we have. and B. applying the effects is the opposite of non-destructive editing. each application of effect or normalizing or whatever is potentially a degradation. copy of a copy, etc. Plus, you cant A-B stuff, cant audition less or more of an effect. I mean, sure you can undo, but that's not very easy to see what you're doing. Pretty much everytime you see a progress bar, you are destructively editing, copy of a copy type destruction. Introducing rounding errors everytime. Sonar and cubase dont do this. (well, i assume cubase doesnt). /rant

lol, no, i said it looks like it goes thru both capacitors any way you switch it. I thought the point was one or the other or both.

Hmm, i'm confused here... situation:normal. so, when the upper 2 lugs are connected, it looks like signal goes 2 different ways and gets to ground thru the .047cap. and then when the lower 2 are connected, looks like the only way it can get a signal is thru the .022cap before it: To me, it looks like the only position that works right is the neutral position which puts the 2 caps in series? Or did i just have too much fun at the Cherry Poppin' Daddies last night?

Hey guys, on the solo/blower switch thing, is it enough just to take the tone pot out of the circuit? Atm, I have both the vol and tone bypassed on my bridge only blower. I really like the increased highs on that setting, but i'm wondering, if i leave the volume in the circuit, will i still get the same effect? Or, does the volume suck out a little of the signal even when its on 10? Would the 'treble bleed' mod mitigate that suck, if it does exist?

While pondering my wire scheme, i realized i was going to need a lot of wire, and lots of colors would help keep me sane. Or at least help keep me from going more insaner. Out in the junk pile, I found an old parallel printer cable that contained 25 individual 24awg stranded wires, 6ft. long, all colors of the rainbow! You can get these at the thrift store for prolly nothin', if your junk pile is missing one This should be good wire to use in a guitar, eh?

If you are wedded to the individual Vol and tone pots, Yes I am, but dont tell my fiance IRL ;D Yeah, JohnH, I had considered that, but i think I'd lose all the series combos, or have to permanently serialize some combos. I ordered some 6pdt so, we'll see how this all shakes out. I'll update here

Tiny little 4pdt toggle from Tyco. www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?C=15855&M=PPROP&P=83230,83246&BML=10576,16354,13873&LG=1&PG=1&IDS=122189,122202,384547,122217,384552,122318,126107,122581&N=4 But, I digress I'll make a new thread about all the crazy switches I've found in my quest.

well, after much googling, I bought the switch on ebay. They really appear to be the same, the schaller and eyb, although some ppl have their descriptions wrong, maybe. Body cavity depth needed: 1-3/8 inch (34.925mm)
I dunno, we'll see in a week or so when i get em ;D

Ok, Newey, I see it now, thanks. Edited below. still looking for more eyes on the 2 vol 2 tone sitch. Each vol/tone pair should control either the Lead or Rhythm channel. But since I had to wire B+ straight to both volumes, it seems like both volumes/tones are going to control both channels which is not what i want. latest:

afa the pics, i was exporting from Illustrator in cmyk accidently, but it shouldnt matter, really, <shrug>. Are you sure Newey? It seems like pos. 3 is N and M grounds are grounded N and M hots go to B- and B+ is permanently hooked to the Volume. Now, do i want N+(M*B) or (N+M)*B? Well, I'm not sure there is a difference, and either way is fine with me. Could do N*M*B in that spot if it would work better, I just picked that combo off some other circuit to fill the Lead 3 spot. I'm open to suggestion on that one. And the fact that the B+ goes to both volumes (and therefore both tones?) looks OK to you? appreciate you guys helpin'

k, i just got a super switch, the width of these things is 13/16s or 21mm for those of you in more technically advanced countries. Could you mount one with the wide side out? You'd have to route and then you'd be very very close to to the edge. But, i think if you had a blank pg, I think you could mount it at a shallower angle and have to route less or not at all.
I'll order another one (if my mod in the other thread works out) and get some plexiglass or something to experiment on.

hmm, i dont like the looks of this... seems like there's going to be an ish with both tone controls? (dont worry about spacing, the pots will be stacked. Because of the B+ going straight to the volumes? There's going to be tone leak or volume leak?

bahh, sorry guys about the diagrams. Should i just stick to one (well, two) diagram at the top and update it as i go? Or keep posting revisions as well? I think I've addressed Newey's items:

Exactamundo Or in other words, Each super switch has 5 options, and the 4PDT switches between the 2 choices. ok, couple new diagrams, with wiring as JohnH suggests. Now, I'm not sure about what's in phase or not. In fact, as usual, I'm not sure about any of it
edited-pics should show up better now

Oh, absolutely, Wolf. There's tons of sounds that i wont get. My point is, thats ok. Cuz I will have an operational ease of use that's going to be really cool i think. The whole 2 channel idea is going to be really useful, I mean, prolly lots of us have a 2 channel set up on our amps. And, the 9 sounds of my proposed wiring, times whatever tone pot variations, times my Tonelab's umpteen amp models and umpteen cab models, plus i could do a phase switch...lol, you do the math ;D Well, that's if i have this wiring scheme designed right. And I still havent figured out the N*M.

whoa, that *is* big. But i dont get why you say i only get one extra tone? maybe i didnt explain that the two diagrams each represent a different super switch. My goal was to get the following two sets of 5 sounds, denpending on the 4pdt: either or N N*M N+M N*B oop N+B N+M*B N+B oop B*M B B I used + for paralell and * for series So, i lose M and M+B, no problem. And, Its fine to have B on both channels, i can see using one with tone down, and one at 10

Reading about the ToneMonster, I loved the idea of having 2 channels set and ready to play. But, I thought, what if you did 2 super switches, double barrel style, and a 4PDT, and have more options to choose from for each channel. I set this up with a master vol for both channels, but a tone each, per channel. I could have two volumes i guess. Welp, I think I have the rhythm channel figured out. I'm stuck on the lead channel, how to get N*M. But, I'm new nut, so please, check my math on both of these. LOL, prolly both of em are messed up, afaik.

Does anyone have any pictures of the Double Barrel mod? I'm real interested in how close the 2 switches can be together and how they fit in with other parts like pots.
Specifically, i'd like to put the second switch right above and slightly bridgeward of the stnd 5 way, while keeping the pot in the middle hole intact. Also, on a blank pickguard, i could move the middle pot hole down, closer to the bottom pot. I wont have a pot in the top hole.

For that to be the case, M + B must likewise be out of phase. You need to swap wires on one of the 2, doesn't matter which one. I dont have M+B anymore (see 5way sw). Still, i guess i'd just have to swap phase of either M or B. Took 'er out to jam with the guys, dayumm! Sounds awesome. Even the oop tones I could use on stuff, like the cleanish rythym part on Cheap Sunglasses. Then I'd hit the blower for the chorus.

"Oh, you dont want to look in there" Allright, this has elements of other guys' mods, not sure where credit is due, exactly. Features: 5 way switch: 1. M 2. N+M 3. N 4. N+B 5. B Phase switch (puts neck in opposite phase. Slide switch) Bridge Override or "Blower" (Enables bridge pup only, vol and tone out of circuit) Master Tone pot. Here's the diagram And here's where i put the switches: The slide switch is pretty ugly, i'll make it purty on my next pickguard. Also, i dont know that this is the best place for the blower, but it works pretty well. Jam night at Dude's place tonight, so, we'll see. In the future, I'll prolly use dual stacked pot and have tones for both neck and bridge. And I want to do something that gives me series tones, prolly the double barrel, maybe just a a toggle. Tones: Well, afa the 5way, the different tone is N+B: Twwwannngggy. It's cool for countryish. The phase switch (when N+B or N+M) makes it thin and hollow. Good for special fx, I havent cranked the amp phased yet, so we'll see. Blower: this is really cool. Its just a little bit louder and treblyer than regular position 5. Nice to be able to hit that for full power blast. Oh, something i noticed: with the phase switch to the right, its in phase for N+M, and out for N+B. And viceversa. Going to have to see if i can make it inphase/oop for both combos one way on the slider.

Uh, i guess this might go in the lutherizing board...but... [Edit: No, it's fine here, it deals with wiring-mod issues more than chopping up some Tone-Plastic© (copyright Runewalker, 2006).]
Yeah, as i was winding up and tuning my strings for the umpteenth time, I was thinking it would be cool to cut the pickguard in two. Be able to leave the pups' half on the guitar and play with the wiring by unscrewing the other half. Kinda like on a tele, i guess. You could test new wiring without even putting the bottom half back on if youre careful.
Anyone tried this?

Nope, like wolf said, it only takes 2 poles. One decides whether the Bridge pickup goes to the switch or directly to output. The other decides whether the 5-way goes to the output (via V/T) or not. Ah, like this? Did I get that right? With no tone suck problems? please note the switched neck/mid wires (giving me N+B @ pos 4). Also, phase switch for neck pup.
