Hello weary traveler,
Your journey has brought you to Guitarnuts2, the second Home for Wayward Pickers. This is a peaceful oasis, although at times it can be buzzing with creative activities.
Want to learn some DIY skills or share yours with others? We do that here. Talk about guitars, music, current events in the music world? We do that too. Tell a joke or two? (keep it clean, please) Yep. All those things are welcome here.
In an effort to get your GN2 experience off to a great start, the Staff has assembled this thread and a host of others. The topics include Rules and Recommendations (Yes, there are a few rules), Important Information (such as where to find things and which forums are open for questions), and Forum Finesse (How to use the many features built into the forum structure to your advantage).
If you're new and unsure of yourself you can post a question about procedure in the New Members Q&A and Greetings thread. Some people like to announce their arrival. You can do that in the New Members Q&A and Greetings thread, too.
Only GN2 staff can start threads on the Forum Related Info board but if you have suggestions for improvements to GN2, feel free to start a thread on the Suggestion Box board. That entire board was made for the sole purpose providing the general membership a convenient way to convey their ideas to the GN2 Staff. We value your input. Not all ideas will be put into action. But they will all be heard and considered.
The Welcome Center is full of links to other threads.
Click one, and you will open a post or thread on a specific topic.
In many cases in this thread, 'Read About it Here' will appear immediately below the link.
If you click that phrase, the contents of the specific topic thread will be displayed.
Click that phrase again and the contents will be hidden.
The original rules we've been using for a decade (this is a must-read)
The Rules{Read About It here}It was here in number one, and it's still here in number 2!
GuitarNuts is a friendly, informational community!
This isn't so much a rule as a guideline, but a very important one. One of the things that set GuitarNuts apart from most other online forums was its friendly, hostility-free nature and helpful member base. The simple fact that we have survived the loss of our original board demonstrates the will for the common good! We are not so much an internet site as a group of people, and kindness is one of our defining factors. In that light,
Flaming and harrassment will NOT be tolerated.
Among people, especially the more artistic type, one tends to find many different stances and opinions. As a result, personal differences are almost certain to arise. Gear preference, playing style, and musical interest are among a few of the many varied areas of preference of our diverse group of members. However, all conduct on this board -will- remain civil and be devoid of personal attack! If you happen to be a fan of Fender and someone else is expressing their love for Gibson, I certainly hope you are mature enough to realize that they are not attacking your preference in musical instruments, and leave to each their own.
This rule will be strictly enforced, violators will have -one- post's worth of leeway, following a warning, before a permanent ban!
Before, GuitarNuts was privately hosted and moderated, and its member base was allowed to post pending membership status. This managed, for the most part, to keep people with ill intention away from our boards. With this in mind,
Posting on GuitarNuts2 will require membership.
There are a few reasons for this. For one, it is far easier in the minds of those who would do ill unto our beloved home to hide behind the "Guest" username and fling mud. For most such individuals, taking the trouble to register with our forum in order to cause trouble will be outside the scope of their ambitions.
Secondly, members with a username will have the chance to gain a status and name in the community, and as a result we will grow. If you answer GuitarGuy345's question about pickups in one board, and he's friendly, you'll be more apt to reply when he's saying "My pickups are fixed but now my amp doesn't work!" in a few boards over.
I'm sorry to bother those of you who only intend at present to ask one question or make one statement with attaining a membership, but it really is a simple, short process. If and when you return for a second visit, we will all be here waiting for you, but moreover, we will -recognize- you!
A note about language.
I personally do not have the cleanest of mouths on a day to day basis, so rest assured that I am not simply a prude when I say, foul language is inappropriate and unneccessary to the conduct in the GuitarNuts2 environment. Not only is it offensive to your average forum-dweller, the purpose for the majority of your general "four-letter-words" doesn't reach beyond anger and spite. I assume that if you have the intellectual faculties to pick up an instrument and play it, you can express yourself in a personable manner.
With all that said, be advised that the contents of this thread are subject to change as we get used to our new home and the different social environment it brings. Everyone, have a good time!

A Few Additional Things
All of RH's simple rules still apply, and will be vigorously enforced. In addition, please keep in mind these additional things:
- Please look to see you are posting to the appropriate board. Non-germane threads will be moved in order to retain some semblance of organization.
- Some boards (e.g., "Sound Samples") have rules of their own which should be consulted before posting to such boards.
- In particular, the rules of posting to the "Schematics" sub-board in "Electronics and Wiring" will be strictly enforced. Questions or comments about a schematic should be started in a general "E & W" thread, with a link to the schematic for reference.
Again, we hope to see you around. Happy Modding!
Communication skills and etiquette
POSTING RULES{Read About it Here}1. Be aware that there are eyes old and new, as well as minds old and new that render help a'board.
2. Please use the the English language along with the principles of grammar taught from grade school up.
3. If you did not suffer through such an education since you were not schooled in an English speaking country, do the best that you can, as you always have.
4 what im saying in other words if the post text runs together without whitespace is devoid of capitalization and punctuation or is compressed into one huge parablob one just might not get the most timely or complete attention of folk that already know the answer to a query this is unfortunate but consider it the fee that some of us charge this is also true if the query is random or vague or illogical or that you assume that we can read minds we can but please refer to the paragraph 2 above since it also applies to ones proclivity for mind reading and the desire thereto
If you post in such parablobic blather-scythe, I will presume (likely correctly) that you won't be capable of understanding the logical solutions tendered, and will focus my efforts on those willing to take the time to properly use language skills.
If you are posting from your iPhone or crackberry, then you most assuredly won't be capable of understanding the logical solutions tendered, especially as they likely will include information in schematic and wiring diagram form.
That's why we invented PCs with real displays and keyboards.
You will find that most responses on this board are in a form suitable for long-term reference by as many folk that might want to.
The first thing that they will have to decipher is the original post. The difficulty inherent therein will determine their willingness to continue.
The folk not of English speaking education mentioned in #3 have an even more difficult time following parablobic bundles of word phrases like #4.
After all, that is the point of this board.
Listing your website in your User Profile
Notice to new members{Read About it Here}We have had an influx of spam members, who don't intend to participate here, but who register solely in order to list their website in their profile. This allows them a sort of free advertising, since a Google search will pull up the member profile with their website listed.
To combat this, our staff has begun deleting any new member accounts which list a website, either in the signature area or in the profile.
Therefore, when you register as a new member, please do not list any website in your member profile, to avoid deletion.
If you have a guitar-related website that you wish to promote, please post first, then add your website to your profile afterward. That way, we won't mistake you for a spammer.
Information about the PhotoBucket Hostage Crisis.
Notice re: Lost Images{Read About it Here}To all users:
You will notice that many of the images posted to this forum over the years can no longer be viewed. This is because, for years, many users used a third-party service, photobucket.com, to host images posted here. This was done because ProBoards software does not support image hosting itself.
However, Photobucket has recently changed their TOS so that users must now upgrade to a paid account in order to post images to other sites. The cost to do so is substantial. And, to make matters worse, rather than simply barring users going forward, they have retroactively deleted all the prior links to their hosted images.
To existing members, I suggest downloading all your materials from photobucket. As you come across images of your that have been lost, you can repost them as attachments to your original post, or host the images elsewhere if you have that capability.
For new users, if you are interested in a particular lost image from one of the currently active members, please PM that member to see if the member can resurrect the image in question. If it is from a member who has not signed on in awhile, you may not get a response to the PM, so feel free to PM me or other staff and we'll see what (if anything) we can do.
This has been a major setback for the historical continuity of this Board, but we will simply have to try to work through this as best we can.
Also, if anyone has other/better ideas, please share them. I have left this thread unlocked for that purpose.
Image Posting
New Instructions on Image Posting{Read About It Here}
- PhotoBucket has pretty much hosed all online communities, forcing us to look for other alternatives. PhotoBucket, you were the go-to host for images for over a decade. We salute you. But now you've done us dirty by holding all those images as hostages. Therefore, we salute you again. But since this a family-friendly site, we won't mention how many fingers were involved in that second salute.
- Attachments have drawbacks (can't be viewed by unregistered visitors, etc) and since we're above the free limits, they will cost money on a continuing basis. We're moving away from them. The button has been removed. Existing attachments are still visible but posting new ones is no longer possible.
- SIU the Simple Image Upload plug-in with imgbb is an extremely convenient way to (Add image to post) just like the button says. You can make an account with imgbb if you choose. But that isn't required. Just click the button and a dialogue window will guide you through the process of uploading an image from your computer or one you've found on the internet. This will be the most useful for new users. It's incredibly easy to use.
IMPORTANT: This is a family-friendly site. Be sure to upload only appropriate images. Is this something you'd want your child to be able to see? No? Then don't post it on GN2.
- The rather insistent notice you will receive when Cloudinary is brought to GN2, is worth your attention. By making an account with Cloudinary and filling in the two new fields in your user profile, another button (Upload File) will appear when you create a post. More possibilities exist here. In addition to images, you can upload pdfs and many other file types. And you can get images you already use on other social media.
While more complicated than the SIU system it does allow a ton of features. And like SIU the button is right there when you need it. Think of this a second-level alternative, by the time you outgrow SIU, you'll probably have the skills to begin making use of some of the numerous benefits of the more complicated Cloudinary system.
- We may bring other file hosting sources to GN2 as a button-driven option when posting. If ProBoards Support writes additional plugins, we'll explore those options.
- As always, GN2 can still allow images from many other hosts. The process is more complicated for you, but if you want to use your images from IMGUR, for instance, feel free to do so.
- This post will be updated as new information is made available. Be sure to read it occasionally.
- Questions are permitted but only on GN2 part of the equation. In other words, the buttons and changes to your user profile.
- If you have suggestions for other ways images might be dealt with, use the the appropriate venue: The Suggestion Box .
Rules regarding copyrights and ethical posting
New Rule regarding certain links....{Read About it Here}My Fellow Nutz,
As of today, May 28th, 2012, newey and I have set in place a Policy outlining what's acceptable in regards to certain links posted by members. This has been done because of all the usual copyright concerns, so please bear with us. Alright, here we go:
A) Please do not post any link that initiates a download of material or content over which you do not personally exercise full and complete copyright control, or there is a disclaimer attached providing that the material or content has no copyright, express or implied. Posting such a link will get you one Warning, and only one. After that, it's all over but the shouting.
(EDIT: Some questions have arisen that tell me I wasn't clear enough. Please see Reply #3 below for more details.)
B) The exception to the above is a YouTube video, for which ProBoards provides a direct means of viewing that content. For the purposes of this Policy, we'll go so far as to include any video or any audio, regardless of which site it is hosting it, provided that such sites must host and provide their own players for "in browser" viewing/playing, provided further that such material is subject to the copyright policies of that site.
C) You may do any of the following without fear of facing the Ban Hammer:
5) Discuss in general or in particular the methodologies of such transferring of content or materials.
[/ul]D) This includes any form of reference to downloading material or content, such as Torrents, magnets, sharing sites, blogs, P2P networks, etc. Those are only examples, the point being that any form of sharing material or content falls under this Policy.
The Short and Sweet:
You can talk about it, you can reference it, you can say almost anything about it, but you can't do it directly. Capisce?
Further:
This Policy is set in place to guide members who might wish to share their resources for finding things that might be of interest to other Nutz. As usual in this joint, newey and I will deal with questions of intepretation on a case-by-case basis, should the need arise.
[/Policy statement]
p.s. - newey advises me to add that all of this is subject to the Statutory and Case Laws of the good ol' USofA. Should Congress, or the Courts, turn in another direction, this policy will be updated to concur with such changes.

OK, we return you now to your regularly scheduled Forum, already in progress........

Report abusive posts to GN2 Staff, not ProBoards
Abuse Reporting Policy
{Read About it Here}Our online host is now nothing but one of the thousands of boards that colorful characters browse in their free time, to get their jollies by bothering innocent people. Therefore, the expected amount of spam, flaming, and abuse is considerably higher than at our previous, privately hosted home.
We are the only protection we have as far as dealing with such individuals, and as such I urge you to adhere to the following procedure in the event of the violation of our rules.
First and foremost: Do NOT attempt to report the abuse to Proboards! Prior experience has taught me that they have a very clean-cut method of dealing with abuse; cleanly cut all the board's content!
In the event that a user makes an abusive post, do not reply to the post in any way. Continue conversation as if the post had not been made; replying to such people only lets them know that you will play their game.
PM me, RandomHero, or one of our global moderators. (They can be found using the "staff" filter on the Members list.) Please include the offending poster's username, the board thread name, and a brief summary of the exchange in question. In most cases, I or another staff member will be available to review the report and take action that very same day.
PLEASE REPORT ALL ABUSE, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT THE TARGET. If everyone takes the stance that "someone else will do it," then no one will. I would much rather have a flooded inbox than be unaware of abuse from boards I may not frequently browse myself.

Proper (and improper) use of Personal Messages
Rules Regarding the Use of Personal Messages (PMs)
{Read About It Here}
The following are ways you must NOT abuse the PM system:
Soliciting technical help
Soliciting guidance on proper use of the forum
Harassment of other members
Bringing the contents of a PM into the public space
Victims
Well, there you have it. A whole lotta 'don't's. Are there any 'do's regarding PMs? Maybe one.
Do use PMs when posting in the public space is inappropriate. Use a post or thread whenever possible.
Proper (and improper) use of Personal Messages
Personal Messages are almost unnecessary on GN2. We have Quotes, Likes, and Tags which will generate notifications to a user. Still there may be some instances where a PM is useful. The following are ways you must NOT abuse the PM system:
Soliciting technical help
GN2 is an information-driven community. We all learn from information shared in the public space. Both from the information itself and the way it's conveyed by those with strong communication skills. Do NOT cheat the rest of the community the opportunity to learn because you want a private lesson. In most cases, the reply you'll get will be a lesson you should already know: "Please post your request for information in the appropriate forum."Reasonable exceptions:
- You would like a brief clarification of a detail in a post and don't want to clutter the thread. The author will then decide whether to answer privately or direct you to post your question in his thread.
- You spot an error and wish to politely advise the author rather than cluttering his thread or causing him embarrassment (or causing yourself embarrassment in the event you're wrong). "I'm not sure, but I think you might have made an error" could be a polite way to begin pointing out a potential error.
Soliciting guidance on proper use of the forum
This one is less egregious, since often a new member might be embarrassed because they don't understand forum operations. But there's no reason to be embarrassed. None of us were born with the knowledge of how a forum works. We all started from ground-zero. Most of us were treated politely when we were first getting started. It's a privilege to have the opportunity to pass that on.
Read the New Members Questions thread. The answer to your question may already be there. If not, feel free post your question there.
Harassment of other members
This will not be tolerated. Not in the public space. Not via PMs. If you think no one else will know you're harassing someone privately, think again. There are mechanisms which can be used to make the Staff aware of improper actions via the PM system. Recipients of abusive messages will notify the Staff if this becomes necessary. Appropriate action such as a documented warning, temporary BAN, or permanent BAN will be taken, when necessary.
Bringing the contents of a PM into the public space
As a general rule, DON'T.
A user shouldn't be sharing personal information with you, but if they do and you post that in the public space on GN2 in an effort to embarrass them, appropriate action will be taken against you.
If you've been the recipient of an abusive PM, contact the staff via PM. Do NOT bring that into the public space.
Victims
Don't be one.
Don't share personal information in PMs.
Don't reply to abusive messages. (Contact a member of the GN2 Staff)
Well, there you have it. A whole lotta 'don't's. Are there any 'do's regarding PMs? Maybe one.
Do use PMs when posting in the public space is inappropriate. Use a post or thread whenever possible.

What's a GWTI?
{Read about it here.}That cryptically named item in the Navigation Bar is the result of a Madman with a penchant for Tables, Links, and Spreadsheets going overboard and a Talented Coder turning what was intended to be an extremely long thread into the first Custom Page on GN2.
It does take a few moment to load, but you might find it to be worth the while. GWTI
Stay tuned for more Custom Pages in the future. The next pages we add won't be as long but they will be useful.
