retread,
Obviously, you have a lot to offer, but I think you really need to reel it in a bit.
4real's idea is to make it fun to participate. Sadly, I can directly relate this notion to how this board used to be more fun to participate in ...
Anyone remember asmith?
He had a lot to offer too, and did so with a glad heart and in a non-contentious way. But that was not always reciprocated, was it?
I'm just saying that maybe, despite everything that you have to offer, you could stand to lighten up a little ...
... you know, share your humble opinion but keep it fun for others to participate?
Which brings us back to 4real's concept, so let's carry on co-operatively and with glad hearts, shall we?
Cheers, D2o

hi John, I just tried the extra wire you suggested.
My usual experience with tone controls is they don't do much until they suddenly drop-off when the knob gets to around 1 or 2.
Maybe it's just my imagination, but the series tone control now seems much smoother and responsive right from the get-go. A worthwhile payoff for a few minutes with the soldering iron.
Many thanks, John - nice call. D2o

Strangely, "plectrum" always reads and sounds like a dirty word to me ...
Anyhoo, I just discovered that if I alter the typo in the subject line of the original post, all future posts should not contain the typo. It was more of a curiosity quest, though ... it seems sacrilegious to change "to" at this point.
Regarding the issue of the plectrum, I use my fingers. Gee ... that didn't help the word sound any better.

John, the guys covering the song are based but a hop and a skip from where I live.
I am so glad you decided to post this - and from halfway around the world, no less!
Yep, it's a cool cover for sure.

I love the black stain, I liked the "table tops" too- great idea. I can think of another use for these, unless I missed it in an earlier post- but they could also be used for monitor stands. Back when I was playing out we used a smaller P.A. for our monitors. We didn't have angled speakers for that & were always rigging up different ways to angle our monitors back. These would have really fit the bill. Good work, Josh- -lpf2 Ditto to all of that ... but ... ... <sqwack> attention: would the remaining 1/3 of lpf please report to GN2, stat, over <sqwack> ...

The only advantage builders in the 50's had over builders today was the wood available to them. Wide timbers of consistently grained wood was more readily available. So true. This is also evident in acoustic guitars, which are much more reliant on good wood to produce good tone. Take Harmony, for example - even though Harmony was not necesarily the creme-de-la-creme, all Harmony guitars of that era were constructed of all good, solid timber. Not so in later years. D2o

Great questions, Newey! Just wanted to drop a line to say thanks for taking the time to put this together each year (and thank you to anyone who has assisted behind the scenes, too). Odds are many of the young whipper-snappers will get at least a few more correct answers than I will - so don't be shy guys! Cheers, D2o

..... he invariably puts a ding in all his guitars, they are just not played if they are not scarred a little. My new project, I am purposely going for a bit of a 'lived in look'. My tele was sprayed by a car sprayer. I know this is a personal thing that varies by individual, but I completely agree. In fact, I only buy used guitars. I bought one that was in mint condition one time and eventually sold it because I was too afraid of being the first to ding it and reduce it's value. I scratched one of my current used guitars on an exposed nail a while back and was pretty proud of myself for only making a loud noise - no swears! Pretty good, eh? My daughter still heard me and came over to ask what happened. I explained and we both started laughing when I couldn't determine which of the scratches was the new one I had just inflicted. That's my kind of guitar. But to each his own, so good luck with the restoration! D2o

Hi asmith,
FWIW, before settling on my current wiring, I had wired my strat with the free neck on and it works as advertised.
Chris once told me "You don't have to buy it, just believe it" ... when Chris said it, I believed it, and it worked.

I was reading through this thread again (great thread, by the way - especially for GN2 where we so often focus on guitar wiring and other technical stuff) ...
Anyhoo, ijws wrote "I've been wondering if I want to skip school this year, and start up again next year."
My response seemed to conclude with "you are at an age where there is nothing to lose in going after your dreams, and I hope that's what you do."
From there, we got into a lot of very interesting perspective from young folks still full of piss and vinegar (I mean that in a good way) as well as from folks more my age who've had little mouths to feed and could not afford to drag them and a spouse along on any wild rides. Inspirational recounts of perseverance in the face of things gone bad.
And there was some talk of bands and music and those sorts of DREAMS as well.
I feel a responsibility to point out to you, ijws, that when I said I hope you go after your dreams, it was in relation to your question about going to school - one way or another, whether it be now or in a year. If you were my child I would definitely tell you to go to school - they worst that can happen is you won't like school and so you lose four years of your life and some money.
More than likely, though, you will make some new friends and graduate ... and, someday 20 years from now as you sit in a heated building, pouring over some boring paperwork, when it's cold and rainy outside, you will think to yourself how you can still always play guitar for the joy of it, even if it pays the bills ; but that you are glad you didn't go the route of always trying to pay the bills playing guitar.
That's really all I meant by chasing your dreams - of wanting to go to school ... "In the big picture, does it matter if that happens in "x" years instead of "x +/- 1" years?"
"you are at an age where there is nothing to lose in going after your dreams, and I hope that's what you do."
Best of luck, D2o

Well said, cyn.
IJWS, you seem to have direction (you haven't gotten specific) and you are young and probably audacious (I mean that in the best sense ... the kind of controlled wrecklessness that some of us wish we hadn't lost somewhere along the way), so whatever feels right in your gut and heart is probably what's right for you.
If you want to find a way to go to school now, no matter what you have to sacrifice - do it ; if you want to take a year to get your affairs in order (it won't be a year "off"), so that you can pursue your dreams - do that.
Do whatever makes you be the person you want to be. In the big picture, does it matter if that happens in "x" years instead of "x +/- 1" years?
I hope this does not come across as taking what you are asking lightly ... it's just that you are at an age where there is nothing to lose in going after your dreams, and I hope that's what you do. Good luck with your decision and things will get better.

I don't know why, but the first thing that came to mind for me was ChrisK's free woman tone, and - REALLY don't ask me why - I then thought of ChrisK's free neck on ... possibly because it's also free, and certainly very cool. While neither of those are what you were thinking of, they are free and always come to mind as being worth it for someone to try if that person wanted to get some different tones without losing any bones. Don't go anywhere with this thought , Jake ... but ... I was in a home decor store today and saw a picture frame made out of thin rectangular pieces of ... BONE! Fleeting thoughts of mutiple pieces of inexpensive bone saddle material entered (and quickly left) my head! ;D Kyle, I tell you. Crappy idea. Anyway, just thought I'd share that funny thought and say hello, and welcome to GN2! D2o [edit - frame ... picture frame]
